I like having discussions about British and American similarities, they are both Western powers.

Someone needs to explain that Mary Poppins is not actually an accurate portrayal of 21st century England.

And also do something about the way he is making this thread ridiculous

There is a class system in Britain, always have, always will.

I'm not making the thread ridiculous, it is the truth. There are the commoners and the political class and the nobility, hereditary and non-hereditary peers...

Yes and all Americans wear cowboy hats, have enormous bellies, say "Howdy" and "Yeehaw" and carry as many guns as they can.

Class is still an unavoidable substrate to most social, political and economic issues in the UK. It also fuels large amounts of brainless hot takes, although most of them are somewhat more rooted in the 21st century than the examples we're being presented with here.

As said in the other thread, Starmer's speech today was mostly good - but maybe calling for more police powers on the day the full depravity of Wayne Couzens was revealed, was just slightly off.

One asks again, why is Cressida Dick totally unsackable?

Angela Rayner calls Conservative Ministers scum, Boris Johnson a racist, homophobic misogynist.

Quote
Angela Rayner says she will apologise for calling Boris Johnson "scum" when he retracts past comments she described as homophobic, racist and misogynistic.

Labour's deputy leader was reported to have called Tory ministers "a bunch of scum" at a Labour conference event.

One Conservative minister accused Ms Rayner of "talking crap", while another urged her to apologise.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he would not have used that language and would "talk to her later".

Ms Rayner was reported to have made her remarks about Mr Johnson at a reception on Saturday evening.

Asked on Sunday morning if she would retract the remarks, she said she believed the prime minister was a "racist, homophobic misogynist".

"I think he needs to apologise for comments he has made in the past," Ms Rayner told the BBC, adding: "I will apologise when Boris apologises for saying the comments he has made, I will retract that he is scum."

That picture looks like the ass of a horse is closest, and then you wonder how the centaur was able to turn her head 135 degrees.

Sadiq IMO backs her as she has been a vocal ally around the impact of police cuts and he favours Neil Basu to succeed her, according to reports- but he knows Patel won’t appoint him and doesn’t want to let her appoint someone else.

Patel apparently wants someone outside of the Met (not the worst idea!) but she can’t find anyone who would be qualified yet (look at the tenures of the previous commissioners)

Basically the standard stuff you’d expect from a stupid appointment system.

What is the British version of the Internal Revenue Service, the American taxman and is it reviled by the British commoners and taxpayers like how Americans hate paying taxes?

The U.S. Revolutionary War was created also because of King George's taxes.....

HM Revenue and Customs. Can't say it's reviled.

Sarah Everard Killer jailed.

Terrible tragedy. The finer details of her abduction are very disturbing.

Clearly, a big thanks to London Met Police on their handling of this investigation. It was vital to get this one solved.

The Met should be disbanded and started again from scratch.  It's not just this case there's countless other failures like their treatment of the Tory MPs accused by Carl Beech.

On the investigation perhaps, but saying a big thanks to the Met Police is a bit tone-deaf at the least. That being said, there's no reason why other police forces could not have the same endemic problems.

I don't think the Met should be rebuilt, but there needs to be a serious root and branch review of the entire organisation. Cressida Dick should, however, be sacked for having overseen this and other recent disgraceful episodes.

Hmm.....the only thing white British commoners can say is that taxes are oppressive, hence they vote Tory to ease the burden....

But all white Britons are privileged due to the fact that they are white.....every white person in the world is privileged, period.

The only way Labor wins in 2024 is they have a bold economic message and they don't mention immigration...

That every white Briton is privileged. From royalty like Queen Elizabeth II to commoner Peter Phillips and you. You are privileged, you have white skin privilege.

Keir Starmer must bang that on, and get on with it if he wants to occupy 10 Downing Street in 2024
