Do you say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy holidays" to people in public?

I live in a large city with a large metropolitan area in a very urbanized state in the United States, so I say "happy holidays" just to be on the safe side.

I say Christmas out of force of habit and rely on them to correct me if they really care that much

I say either or, depending on the mood I'm in. People getting triggered by either secularism or (implied) christianity is their problem, not my problem.

Both because Christmas isn't the only holiday happening in the season and because Christmas is extremely important to me in terms of cultural upbringing.

I say happy holidays unless I know what the person I'm speaking to celebrates.

I'm Asian and I don't get offended when people wish me Happy New Year on 1 January. In Western countries, it is a public holiday that can be celebrated secularly by people of all faiths.

Same. Maybe it's just because I'm from a very diverse, multicultural area; but this seems to be the most rational way to go about it.

That said, more people I've met get pissed off at "happy holidays" more than at misunderstanding what holidays they celebrate. So that just makes me want to say it more. We all have our spiteful side.

You guys do realize that "Happy Holidays" is not some warm and fuzzy, but vague, December greeting, and that it means the Christian season of Advent, or perhaps in a more modern sense, Christmas and New Year, right?... (which are observed as secular holidays in the US, because 1st Amendment and all) For this reason, "happy holidays" doesn't bother me, and I use it to mean Christmas and New Year myself.

At no other time of the year do people say "happy holidays" as a catch-all for whatever holiday they might be celebrating at that time of year. When it's Ramadan, say Ramadan Mubarak to your Muslim friends, when it's Rosh Hashanah, say Shana Tova to your Jewish friends, and when it's Christmas, say Merry Christmas to your Christian and secular friends. We don't have to come up with absurd rationalizations to not say Merry Christmas, unless you are of the opinion that Christmas should be abolished as a public holiday.

I'll say whatever I damn well please. If you give so much of a sh!t about how people wish to greet you during what is SUPPOSED to be a happy, fun, and kind time of year, I'd just like to let you know that you can rip a branch off your Christmas tree and shove it where the sun don't shine.

It's hilarious to see people triggered by people WISHING THEM WELL. That's a textbook snowflake move.

Doing that with a Christmas tree branch is not very enjoyable.

Neither.  I’m no Grinch, but this debate is stupid so I don’t bother saying either.

Don't care either way, but prefer Merry Christmas if forced to pick.
