And many that I have know personally have lived this:




I know more than one man who's lived this.  Men who, back in the day, were hippies who didn't go to college and didn't run to Canada.  Some of these men voted for McGovern back in the day.

"Southie" (Boston's Wards 6 and 7) was full of McGovern-Ford voters. I'm sure I rode the "T" with several in the 1980s.

This was due to the School Busing Crisis in Boston reaching its highest point of contention in the winter of 1975-76.  It's one reason Carter didn't improve in MA on McGovern's showing, and why Reagan carried Massachusetts twice.
