I've always had a special fondness for Adelaide, so I'm voting for South Australia.

Going back over it, I'm pretty sure I've been to every Australian state but Tasmania (but none of the provinces), interestingly enough.

Is that just because of how the state votes in federal elections? Though I don't remember WA being a bastion of the Labor any time recently.

Not at all mate. West Australia is all outback (cool) and Perth (one of my favorite cities). But it is somewhat more conservative than I'm comfortable with. I didn't base this on elections. Just as in America, I think I'd be happier on the coast in an urbanized area, although in abstract I love untamed wilderness like West Aus. and Idaho.

Queensland however, is like the Appalachians and Utah combined, ugh.

Ha Ha Look at Queensland, it has zero votes!

Why hasn't Hugh posted yet? Sad

*deep breath*

I suppose when I fly into the capital of Pakistan, Karachi, and meet with Major Mosharrif I'll have a chance to educate the Pakistinians about the structure of Australia's Commonwealth.

BTW, you fail if you answer Queensland, South Australia or New South Wales; scrape a pass at WA, average pass for ACT or NT, good pass for Tassie, and perfect mark for Victoria.

Why didn't you include New Zealand?

edit-TWO votes for South Australia? You people have no soul *glares*

(of course, if the only reasons for you selecting South Australia were Coober Pedy, Kangaroo Island and maybe the murray near the border...you might have a soul. Just a very dark, rotten one that will spend teternity in the deepest depths of hell Wink)

The only thing I know about South Australia is that it was Rupert Murdoch's home base to start his evil empire. But I'm sure its inhabitants aren't as bad as he is.

So if you had to choose, which sucks more, Queensland or South Australia? I think the former is populated by ignorant rubes, based in part on what you've told me.

You guys joke about New Zealand the way we Yanks make fun of Canada. I wonder who the Kiwis make fun of? Fiji-ians? Antarctica? Smiley

Queenslanders are boorish; South Australians are boring. Matter of personal preference, really.

To be honest, ACT would probably suit you better. More suburban, but also the loosest sex and pornography laws by a long long way.

Niue is a dependency of New Zealand in Polynesia (New Zealand took over those British colonies that didn't want independence, except for some reason Pitcairn.) Over half of Niue islanders actually live in New Zealand rather than on Niue these days. IIRC NZ's ethnic structure is something like 82% White, 10% Maori, 6% other Polynesian. (And the appropriate racial slur for a new arrival from Polynesia is "fob".)

Anyways, it's the wrong answer. The correct answer is "Australians, esp. Australians' habit of shagging sheep."

we're the ones they make the most jokes of, but Niue is their version of America's Canada, Sutralia's New Zealand, or maybe Germany's Belgium Cheesy

BTW, Niue is basically empty since there was a hurricane there sometime late 2003/early 2004.

And in Australia, Fob is for all immigrants, but mainly Viets-it literally means "Fresh Off Boat". The only people i've ever heard use it are Viets, and they use about Viets and other immigrants. I've heards skips referred to as 'lob's, long off boat.

Yeah, I know that fob is supposed to mean Fresh off Boat. Smiley

Belgian jokes ... now these are pretty sick. I don't think I can tell most of them to an audience of minors. They're ...shall we say... Marc Dutroux inspired. (Plus they usually work with untranslatable puns...) They're certainly not a traditional staple of German joking though ... for that, look to East Germans ... or East Frisians ... or Poles.

It's also ultra-socially conservative. From what I understand the island is completely dry, no alcohol allowed at all, and fishing is illegal on Sundays.

Anyway, probably ACT if what hugh says is true, what are the laws like? To find out more, I'll probably have to research on where the best strip clubs are.

The best would either be Sydney or Melbourne, Melbourne would have a better average. The ACT...not sure; but they'd probably be alright if few. As I said, it's a lot more suburban. I think the ACT would better suit opebo; but I think Brunswick, a suburb of Melbourne, is designed for you. You have to catch a tram into the city (10 mins.) or over to St. Kilda (20 mins. with good connection) for the strip clubs, but it would be your kind of place. Maybe, Fitroy or Northcote. You'd be inner north, anyway.

I think you'd be best suited to the Northwestern Sydney suburbs or inland north coast parts of Perth, actually. Certainly not Adelaide, nor rural SA or Queensland. Brisbane and the Gold Coast are possibilities, but I think suburban Sydney or Perth'd suit best.

Well you know what I think of suburbs. I'd just live in Melbourne proper.
