Carter was definitely still "the best" candidate for the South in 1980, it was his best region of the country.  Just a 1% swing to Carter in 1980 flips AL, AR, KY, MS, NC, TN, and SC.

Not a bad list, although for 1992, that could honestly be any of the three, as Bush and Perot were from Texas, and Clinton was from Arkansas. Looking at the electoral college, it was very close. When it comes to the states that the Census Bureau defines as the Southern United States, Bush picked up 8 states, and Clinton also picked up 8 states alongside the District of Columbia.

Kind of interesting to see people say simultaneously Eisenhower in 1956 and Goldwater in 1964 ... LOL, the losing candidate in both elections had an enclave in the Deep South...?
