Very hard to pick only 5, but my choices were Shakespeare, Dickens, Twain, Orwell, and Other (Alexandre Dumas père).

What do we mean by greatest? Other than the Gospels of the New Testament, Shakespeare has probably left the biggest mark in English literary history, perhaps even world literary history, given the current world order. If we're talking favorites among widely-esteemed and influential authors, off the top of my head, DH Lawrence.
