From 1938-1958 yes but not after that until 1980. I believe many Southern Dems in the Nixon era supported economically leftist policies or "populist " policies but many of them retired in the late 70s and were replaced by democrats who were more right-leaning economically or were defeated in the 80 wave and replaced by rigth wing republicans.

Re: Reaction to Reagan winning the election « on: November 5, 1980 at 4:32:17 pm » I went going into the night excpecting Reagan to win by 6-7 points and around 380-390 EV a prediction which got me mocked by so many red avatars and it turns out they were right to mock me because I was very wrong as Reagan won by nearly 10 points and won 489 EV. I was flipping back and forth between NBC's coverage which I felt was pretty good , ABC's to see George Will's great commentary though both channels using different color schemes was puzzling. What makes this election even better is Republicans have taken over the senate knocking down long time Dem incumbents who everyone thought was safe such as Herman Talmadge and took down so many liberal sentors such as McGovern, Bayh, Church, Culver , Javits and replacing them all with Conservative Republicans which will make Reagan's agenda much easier to enact and I cant wait for long time conservative goals on taxes, and regulations to finally go into affect.
