The Carolinas in 1980 comes to mind for Reagan. In 1984 Reagan had solidified his Southern support enough so that it would not have mattered either way. George H.W. Bush would have won the South anyway with the support of the NRA. Dukakis was a terrible fit for the region. Anyway, it helped them at the margins by maybe 1-2%.
