Composer Danny Elfman stated that, "Well, from what I've heard, it is coming to an end," he told the outlet, adding: "I don't know for a fact, but I've heard that it will be in its last year."

It'd be great if this were true but it's not. Fox already renewed it for two more seasons: https://deadline.com/2019/02/the-simpsons-renewed-seasons-31-32-fox-1202550894

I definitely hope Family Guy outlasts it though!

I'll never understand why people would want a show off the air that they don't watch.  Shows you don't watch can't hurt you, I'm not sure why you think they would.  Do you want everything gone that you don't appreciate?  Do you want musicians you don't listen to stop making music?  Directors you don't like to stop making movies?  Does this stem from your desire to ban things that other people enjoy?

Lighten up humanity.

Because it frees up time for a better replacement?

Disney doesn't need it. They make plenty of money from all of their other properties.

The fact that the Simpsons is still running after 30 seasons (which means, presumably, there are actually some people out there who still watch it, otherwise Fox wouldn't be spending the $ on it).. is one of those things that makes me wonder if I'm actually living in a computer simulation like the Matrix or accidentally transported to a parallel universe, etc.

Of course, the Simpsons when it was still new and fresh, around seasons 1-7 or so, was some of the best TV ever to exist.. those Simpsons have long ended and anything resembling them has ceased to exist for well over 20 years now.

Unpopular opinion, but I still like the Simpsons (though not nearly as much as I did for the first ten seasons or so).

Damnit, this means South Park will be the longest running show if it doesn't end in seven years. This is truly the worst timeline.

Indeed. I've not watched the Simpsons in at least 5 years, but the newest episode (Todd Flanders loses his faith as a result of his mother's death) seemed interesting so I decided to check it out. I found it pretty good, honestly. It definitely had its weak moments and the ending was a bit abrupt, but overall it had a few good laughs and moments of pathos that reminded me of the show from long ago. I've also heard good things about the recent Thanksgiving episode and might check that one out as well.

Honestly part of me thinks the show will never end. IIRC A few years ago when Harry Shearer was threatening to quit they were planning to replace him with a few different actors to keep the golden goose going. I could see them gradually easing out the original cast and replacing them with soundalikes. And even if it ever did end, you'd see a revival within a few years, which nostalgia would probably ensure would last regardless of quality.

The Simpsons is a fine show.  Certainly better than the average television show on the networks in 2019.  The WORST Simpsons ever is 4 times as entertaining as the best karaoke show.

It is kind of funny how angry the internet gets at a cartoon though.  "I don't watch this show, it hasn't been funny since season x.  They should take it off the air and replace it with something else I won't watch because I think I'm way more important than I actually am."

Have you seen those cartoon reviewers on YouTube? Like, TheMysteriousMrEnter or PhantomStrider8? They take a bad episode of a cartoon, or perhaps a bad cartoon show altogether, and make it seem like the world is gonna end because of it. It especially doesn't help how you have people in their mid-to-late-twenties ripping apart animated shows that are usually for a target demographic of people under the age of 10. I mean, I hate Teen Titans Go as much as the next person, but some entitled manbabies complaining about a television show is extremely unlikely to just make it go away.

Not to say that the entire cartoon reviewing community is a pile of crap. RebelTaxi and Saberspark, for example, are actually decent content creators who put work into their craft and don't just trash cartoons and ask the networks to cancel them because they personally think that the shows suck. But the majority of the community is either wince-worthy, toxic, or both.

It all comes down to different ways of approaching entertainment. Yeah, the Boomer attitude is to view art as thoughtless pastime, but if you think the point of art is to be good, bad art is going to offend you on some level.

but there has always been bad art (I shouldn't have to remind anyone here that this is all subjective too), and it's always been pretty easy to ignore, just like the Simpsons is in 2019.  Why must it be destroyed?  The popular music everyone under 35 grew up with is horrible, but I don't want it gone.  I don't get opera, don't think it should be subsidized by the govt, but I don't give a sh**t if "fancy" people enjoy it.  How does it hurt me?

and I have no idea what you mean by the "Yeah, the Boomer attitude is to view art as thoughtless pastime".  That's not how I view it and I'm not a "boomer" (not even particularly close) so if that was supposed to be an insult, it didn't work.  (unless it just to make you feel better, in which case, mission accomplished.  If I was supposed to feel insulted, I can assure I was not.)

Even bad art can have its redeeming qualities. I think what peeves people about The Simpsons in particular is that it was once legitimately one of the greatest shows ever, now maintained by people who don’t know what made it great, now how to recreate that greatness, for the sole purpose of making money.

It isn’t always about what hurts you. Sometimes it’s about good things being good, and bad things being bad.

I agree, the haters do have an unhealthy emotional connection to early Simpsons.

Okay, this is actually a valid point: as much as you are a Boomer for not caring what's put in front of your face after you've had twenty-four Natty Lights at the end of a workday, perhaps we also show our age by emotionally defending moving picture shows, instead of going out and forming sentimental attachments to... chopping firewood? Idk

I've never had 24 beers in a sitting, I've never drank Natty Light and I've never chopped fire wood, nor would I suggest anyone become sentimentally attached to it.  Knowing how to change a tire is a much more useful skill.
If I was supposed to feel insulted, I can assure I was not.
