Absolutely (and I really can't hear it differently even when people say they are distinguishing between the two).  The same goes for me with almost any word with i or e combined with n or m.  The one I can hear the difference is when people use the vowel from get to refer to the Cincinnati Bengals, and it sounds like nails on a chalkboard (I, of course, pronounce it rhyming with Pringles).

In Hindi/Urdu, if you stretch the soft e "pen" it ends up being "ai (ay)" as in main, lay, stay. If you stretch the soft "i" as in pin", it becomes "ee" as in feel / me / seething. As somebody who speaks basic Hindi (very very badly), I now think about vowels in this way and can't possibly see a soft e or soft as similar or able to stretch to become one another.

yes, I don't like it, I try to deny it*, but I say it the same damned way.

*If I'm talking slow I spend a little more time on "pen" than I do on "pin" and my mouth shape is slightly different, but I don't normally talk slow and it sounds the exact same 99% of the time I actually say the words

I used to pronounce these the same way until I left the South and made a conscious effort to differentiate between the two.

Tell that to the Californians and other Westerners that keep saying "caught" and "cot" are the same.

Of course we should discuss with maps. The shaded area pronounces pin=pen according to The Atlas of North American English. I'm from the unshaded area and I voted no.

I admit to doing this one without second thought. The only way I can get them to separate is by faking a Bostonian accent.
