Spitzer may face Democratic challenger

By FRANK ELTMAN
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

MINEOLA, N.Y. -- New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who made some powerful enemies with his crackdown on Wall Street abuses and is now running for governor, could face a strong challenge from a fellow Democrat bankrolled by one of Spitzer's fiercest corporate foes.

Spitzer has at least $12 million in his ever-growing war chest, national stature from his attacks on corporate wrongdoing and a commanding lead in the polls. But that may not stop Tom Suozzi, a brash Long Island politician, from getting into the race.

Suozzi, the Nassau County executive, has the hugely influential backing of Home Depot founder Ken Langone, a Long Island billionaire who has tangled with Spitzer on Wall Street and has vowed to raise "as much money as I can" to help knock off the two-term attorney general.

Suozzi has yet to declare his candidacy officially but filed papers Wednesday to form a fundraising committee for a gubernatorial run, a state elections official said.

If he does run, he will have to upset a better-known candidate who already has the blessing of many Democratic party elders thirsting for victory after 12 years of Republican Gov. George Pataki.

This is old news.

If Suozzi had any brain in his head, he'd either keep his current job or run against Peter King in NY-03.

This is true but the problem is that Suozzi, just like all politicians, has an ego the size of a blimp.

I'm just curious but is anti-capitalism now an official stance of the Democratic Party?

This whole "anti-capitalism" meme by your right-wingers is ridiculous. Sane people don't want special favors and corporate welfare going to large, multi-national corporations. Sane people want a government with the best interests of the people in mind.

Right-wingers favor corporations over people. It's quite disgusting. Democrats want a government that works for both the middle class and continued corporate prosperity.

The fact that it isnt is one of the reasons I left in the first place, so if it became a part, I might reconsider my joining. (but then theres the domination of politics [along with the Reps] problem which I hate)

Ridiculous, Mitty.

Democrats favor capitalism. Republicans favor plutocracy and unfettered corporate power (anti-capitalism).

It seems that way to me, too.

Suozzi's having massive problems keeping his own house in Nassau County in order, let alone running against our glorious future Governor, Eliot Spitzer Smiley

No modern major parties in any Western country could accurrately be termed "anti-capitalist" and definitely not the American Democrats. Bush is not really a very strong supporter of capitalism though. As I've stated before, he isn't an economic conservative, he's just rich.

I woulnd't say two renegade Legislatures teaming with the GOP creating some problems is Massive Problems (for a new  County Presiding Office).  Its something Suozzi has little control over.

He just won re-election against a well known, well funded challenger by 21 points & the Dems pretty much have absolute control in the County govern, met (Legislature squabbble is ccausing some issues, but its seperate froM Suozzi)

This is old news.

If Suozzi had any brain in his head, he'd either keep his current job or run against Peter King in NY-03.

In regards to BRTD's comments Suozzi is not a DINO, the absolute horrific campaign the GOP & PBA put up against him last year shows he is far from a DINO.  The way he has cleaned up the horrific mess the previous GOP administration put together shows he isn't a DINO.  Suozzi tends to agree with the Dems on the vast majority of issues, and constantly blasts the GOP, but he is not afraid to take on his own party when he disagrees.   I would probably vote for Spitzer in a Primay,(though I would say it is only lean Spizer at this point) but I really like Suozzi and he has done an amazing job in turning around Nassau County

As far as him running against Peter King.  That is what I wanted from the start & he would absolutley crush the ile of garbage that is Peter KKing.  At this point it seems one of Suozzi's closest allies Nassau Legislature Dave Mejias (who is my county Legislator) is likley to take on King.

If Suozzi has a clue, he'll run against King for Congress instead.

As I stated above I think he should & he would win if he ran.  Now it looks like Mejias will run for King's seat.

Suozzi's problem stems from his aarogance, that he thinks he can always win.  A big part of that stems from 2001, when Suozzi scored a huge upset over Democrat (State Sen or Assembly forget which) Thomas DiNapoli who had the backing of pretty much everyone in the Democratic  party (in the county, LI & state).  No one expected Suozzi to pull off that huge upset in the Primary other than Suozzi himself, which might be why he thinks he can win again when the odds are stacked against him.
