DC has of course been the most solidly Democratic voting entity of the past 50 years, but I often wonder how it would have voted had it been allowed to participate in presidential elections prior to 1964.

It more than likely would had still have had a Democratic lean to it, but it would not have been anywhere close to being 80-90% Democratic like now. The city had a white majority until the 1960 Census, and the black population was not anywhere close to being as uniformly Democratic in those days.

The wealthy neighborhoods west of Rock Creek Park would have been heavily Republican, while the middle-class neighborhoods east of Rock Creek Park and east of the Anacostia such as Brightwood-Manor Park, Takoma, 16th Street Heights, Hillcrest and Brookland-Woodridge I'm guessing would have been more competitive.

With those factors in mind, it's more than likely the District would have had a high proportion of both Republicans and Democrats, although I'd imagine Democrats still had an overall advantage. 55-60% Democrat I'm guessing?

DC was certainly way too Southern to have voted for Lincoln.
