How do Northeastern states end up occasionally having a GOP Governor then(Vermont for instance)?

How do Northeastern states end up occasionally having a GOP Governor then(Vermont for instance)?

They usually enter office during "perfect storm" conditions (i.e. a combination of good national environment, good candidate, good campaign, etc.), and once in office they are able to sufficiently separate themselves from national-level Republicans.

Phil Scott would be unelectable in Texas or Florida.

Ossoff and Warnock basically came from nowhere.

I mean, Ossoff literally followed the exact same trajectory described in the OP: he ran in a competitive congressional race, fought a good fight, and very nearly won, demonstrating his electoral skill for a potential future statewide race.

Now, Warnock otoh is legitimately a complete outsider.
