Maybe Trump can have his trade deal just in time to rescue his re-election prospects:

China's economy is getting worse. That makes a trade deal more likely

'Very difficult' for China's economy to maintain 6% growth: report

A trade deal wont stop the slowdown that is very much happening on both sides of the pacific. It might give Trump some good press(or not), but the U.S is very likely to dip below 2% growth in 2020 with or without Chinese imports and exports.

Sad that China's economy is getting worse, but happy for the prospects of a trade deal.  America, China, and Russia should work together.

Since an eventual slowing of the Chinese economy has been expected for a long time now, it happening now makes the prospect of progress on trade less likely in my opinion. The Chinese leadership can place the blame on Trump and minimize any chance they get blamed by the Chinese people.

Yeah, seeing this as China having to make a deal is short-sighted. If anything, it helps the Chinese government avoid blame for the slowdown.

Doesn't surprise me, the Chinese economy has always been a sham

But something bad is happening for American companies that nobody is talking about. Chinese consumers have switched in large part to Chinese brands where before the growing middle class and luxury segment wanted American and European goods. Chinese goods are being made better and the Chinese are practicing economic patriotism due to the trade war. American companies might never be able to get that consumer back even after the trade deal is struck. This would be disastrous as the growth in China even if slowed is still astronomical given their large population.
