The 2019 governor races are upon us in three solid R states. In my opinion, the GOP needs to win all three governor races to call these elections a win. If Democrats can hold LA or flip KY and MS, it looks weak for the Republican party to lose in solid R states. Yes, these are conservative Democrats, but on the national level it gives Democrats momentum into the 2020 election. More Democratic voters will be energized, confident, and enthusiastic for the election next year which isn't great for the Republicans. It's not going to change much, it's the mindset from these races that will leave the bigger impact.

TLDR: GOP must win all 3 races, or Dems will have more enthusiasm for the 2020 election which will hurt the Republicans

I would say that a win in MS would be a huge boost, a win in KY would be a moderate boost, and a win in LA would be a "keep on keeping on"-type message.

To be fair though, Republicans lost LA in both 2003 and 2015 and were both followed by Republican victories in 2004 and 2016.

"IMO Democrats must win governorships in MA, VT, and MD to call these elections a win. If Republicans can hold any of these states, it looks weak for the Democratic party to lose in solid D states."

Voters will surely care about this in 2020

They are gonna lose LA and they can lose KY and MS can be an upset. They are gonna lose at least 1.

As far as 2020 is concerned,  the GOP is in this predicament due to Retirements in the House and Isakson's retirement in the Senate. Giving Dems chances to Dems to expand majority

The results of the governor elections won't impact 2020, no matter who wins.

The fact that you are scrambling to win these three gubernatorial races in three ordinarily deeply Republican states in the South should tell you everything you need to know about how much of an albatross Trump really is.

This is a bad take

Trump is in very high standing in these states

Republicans winning these races (or Democrats winning for that matter) really won't have much of an impact on anything.

Electorally and vote wise it isn't going to change much. However, I think it's more of the mindset going into 2020. The Virginia 2017 election and that Connor Lamb special election left a scar on the GOP as 2018 drew closer. Losing the 2019 elections could deplete confidence for the Republicans and that isn't the best mindset going into the elections. It's not much but it is still something.

Trump is really popular in all three states. If anything, he’s what’s keeping Bevin and Rispone afloat. Reeves would have probably still won with or without him.

There is some truth to what he’s saying. I can’t imagine Trump’s standing in Louisville, KY or the MS Delta to be good at all, and that could motivate Dems there to turnout in higher numbers than in other more GOP friendly parts of those states

That's what you think, McConnell is in trouble and everyone knows it. 2018 reaffirms the 278 blue wall and GoP retirements doesn't bode well for winning the House back

If Bevin won, just like in NC-9, Trump would be saying impeachment was dead

The fact that Bevin is only down by 4,000 votes is a fail for dems. They should have walked away with this easily.
