There's no way a populist anti war candidate wins in 2004 , just no way. Also if you think Trump is tough and dirty , Karl Rove would destroy him and without social media there is absolutely no way Trump could survive the onslaught the Bush team would throw at him.

Also, Trump’s lack of experience would make people see him as unqualified to deal with terrorism or to be commander-in-chief.

The only network Trump would get favorable coverage from would be MSNBC and they were nowhere near as big as Fox is now and werent even as big as they later would become later. There literally would be nothing Trump could do to counter the attacks he would get from Team Bush and all the criticism from Fox and CNN because he wouldn't have twitter to resort to.

I think Donald as the Democrat nominee would have really kicked butt. I did not vote for him but he would have beat Bush by about a Carter 1976 margin, and he would have certainly stomped McCain. I can see him have gotten about 400 electoral votes against McCain.

President George W. Bush (R-TX) / Vice President Dick Cheney (R-WY) ✓
Businessman Donald Trump (D-NY) / Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN)

The Trump campaign emerges as an alternative to Flip Floppin' Kerry, Screamin' Dean, and something mildly creative for John Edwards. His anti-Iraq War stance is controversial and proves a liability as Bush uses the immediate post-9/11 patriotic atmosphere against him. America decides against a bombastic liberal personality at the helm during uncertain times. West Virginia is closer because of Trump's protectionism, but environmentalism has already killed the Democratic brand there. Trump likely goes on to become a mayor or maybe even a governor, and supports whatever populist candidate emerges in a future election. Things get interesting for 2008 if Obama's keynote speech gets butterflied away.

Trump as the Democrat nominee would have literally incinerated McCain in 2008. In 2008 running against McCain Trump would easily have gotten 400 electoral votes.
