I found a new bellweather measurement:

Since 1904, whoever has won a MAJORITY of states in the column stretching from Minnesota to Louisiana has won the election (in 1968, Humphrey carried MN, Nixon carried IA and MO and Wallace carried AR and LA, so a majority was not achieved).
