This is a scenario sketch I was thinking about last night while reading my favorite AH.com timeline.

  • 2000 Election goes largely as OTL, with Bush/Cheney facing Gore/Lieberman. The biggest difference is that on election night, neither candidate gains a majority in the electoral college and the election goes to the House. The Senate elects Lieberman as VP narrowly, and the House somehow deadlocks for months. A president is not elected, and Lieberman becomes acting POTUS on January 20th, 2000.
  • Some sort of scandal derails both Bush and Gore, leading the deadlock to continue all the way through 9/11, which still happens like OTL. With two historically unpopular candidates still fighting each other in the House, and the nation more polarized then it's been since Watergate, Gore and Bush decide to both concede (is this even legal??) the election and Lieberman assumes office officially as the 43rd President on 9/12.
  • Lieberman invades Iraq like OTL because of Iraqi WMDs. The 2004 election begins with Cheney as the GOP nominee, a progressive as the Democratic nominee (I'm thinking someone other than Dean, Wellstone, or Edwards). Lieberman leaves the Democratic Party after a devastating loss in New Hampshire to Howard Dean (who later loses to Edwards), and runs as a third party "National Union" candidate with John McCain.
The 2004 election has the following candidates: what does the map look like?

Former Sec. of Defense Dick Cheney (R-WY)/Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA):
Former Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ)/Senator John Edwards (D-NC):
President Joe Lieberman (NU-CT)/Senator John McCain (R-AZ):

The reason for Bush and Gore's decision to concede is threefold: they are historically unpopular and scandal plagued due to their efforts to influence the contingency election one way or another, they want to run in 2004 (which may or may not happen, I haven't even decided), and they want to unify the nation after 9/11, which will be worse than it was in real life.

Rumsfeldia kinda went weird pretty quickly but the 1972-1980 phase of the timeline is to me the best work of alternate history ever produced on the site.

And Kanan’s timeline is immaculate!

Or, better yet, InvisibleTrump, have Bush and Gore both die in the alt-9/11, and Lieberman becomes president and goes after Al-Qaeda with "the fury of God's own thunder" to quote the West Wing before invading Iraq...

I've thought of that, but I couldn't think of a plausible way to get them in the same location. I guess I could broaden the attack, but that would require an earlier POD.
