Yikes, Illinois.  I’m hoping this is a blessing-in-disguise wake up call before heading out west.  Effort like that at Grand Canyon (I’ve read that place is a very intense gym), and we lose!

Nevermind ... lol.  I actually still feel good about Illinois.  I think Arizona could be a top ten team by the time their freshman studs continue to develop.  On to the next one!

^ Lost faith in our coaching staff last night ... WTF was that effort coming out of the gate in the first half?!  All the comeback does is show us how talented we are and how good we should be ... also that last play was just pathetic.  That's what we had drawn up?

This team has the pieces, but I am - for the first time - not sold on Underwood being a good hire at all.

Penn State in the top 25.  Kind of bummed the Illini don't even have a vote in the AP Poll yet (we do have some in the Coaches' Poll), but I guess it's understandable.  Just keep winnin'. Smiley

On a side note, even though it is for some inexplicable reason on the SEC Network this year, Illinois-Missouri is this Saturday in St. Louis.  To my knowledge, it's one of the very few rivalries in college basketball that uses a Texas-Oklahoma or Florida-Georgia setup with the crowd split 50/50.  It has lost a BIT of its appeal over the last several years, but it is routinely one of my favorite sporting events of the year, and it is a truly unique atmosphere.  I must admit, it's often my "super bowl" of the non-conference, and I'd say it's very likely Missouri is our "biggest rival."

A hilarious look at the Big Ten standings right now (after conference record, I sorted by AP ranking, overall record and then alphabetically):

#15 Michigan State: 1-0 (7-3)

#5 Ohio State: 1-1 (9-1)
#7 Maryland: 1-1 (10-1)
#14 Michigan: 1-1 (8-3)
#23 Penn State: 1-1 (9-2)
Indiana: 1-1 (10-1)
Illinois: 1-1 (8-3)
Iowa: 1-1 (8-3)
Rutgers: 1-1 (8-3)
Purdue: 1-1 (6-4)
Minnesota: 1-1 (5-5)
Wisconsin: 1-1 (5-5)
Nebraska: 1-1 (5-6)

Northwestern: 0-1 (5-4)

No home team has lost a game yet, though I predict that streak to come to an end on Wednesday when MSU visits Northwestern, but ... honestly, who knows??  That game wraps up Big Ten play until the new year, and it would be absolutely hilarious to have every single team tied at 1-1, haha.

I saw somewhere that Big Ten home teams are still 37-6 at home, and one third of those losses are from Northwestern, haha.  So, the other 13 teams are 36-4 in B1G play, with these being the only road victories:

Illinois winning at Wisconsin
Rutgers winning at Nebraska
Wisconsin winning at #5 Ohio State
Wisconsin winning at #20 Penn State

Ironically, those three teams (UI, RU and UW) are tied for second place, one game out of first right now. Smiley  Though Big Ten fans are obviously the best in the nation in my mind (I believe we've led the nation in attendance for like 40 straight years?), this stat is likely - and unfortunately - indicative of how absolutely atrocious the refereeing has been in favor of home teams.

So sad I can’t make it back “home” to Iowa City to go to the Illinois/Iowa game with some friends, but I have an exam on Monday and wouldn’t want to be driving during the Super Bowl.  If it were Saturday, I’d think about it.  It’s hard to believe Illinois could be playing for EIGHT in a row in this year’s Big Ten, assuming they can take care of business vs. Minnesota at home.  Iowa is super tough when they’re hitting threes.

Just had to watch Illinois’ season end. After storming back from down 20 in the second half, Illinois drives up the floor with 6 seconds and down 1. Our best player is about to take a shot to win the game, and blows out his knee slipping on a wet spot on the floor. Likely ACL tear.

Sports pain me.

P.s. changing my pick above to Rutgers. No way Illinois can beat Rutgers without Ayo.

That ending took a LOT out of me last night.  Sports can be cruel.  Praying for Ayo; that kid has such a bright future. Sad

Penn State, playing its first game as a Top 10 team since 1996, lost at home to Illinois, which had lost its previous four games.

Meh, we weathered the storm.  AYO, baby!!  Illini 'bout to go on a roll!
