* : Ernest is rumored to be deceased but it has not been confirmed by my knowledge.

How reliable is that? I thought he just got tired of this place. I vaguely remember him saying as much some time ago before he disappeared.

FWIW I believe he left around the time of a COVID spike? Hopefully he is alive and well, though.

the rumor did hinge on the COVID surge at the time which scott mentioned. As I said it's simply a rumor, though considering the suddenness of him leaving and the circumstances around it with the COVID spike and his age, it holds some weight. I sure as hell hope it's not true though.

Looking at recent cohorts, the top 5 for each:

2022:
1) oldtimer 3,196
2) Snow Belt Republican 1,339
3) Liminal Trans Girl leet (1337)
4) Reactionary Libertarian 1,042
5) middleroad 911

2023:
1) The Economy is Getting Worse 3,650
2) Aurelius2 2,080
3) WalterWhite 1,990
4) wnwnwn 1,257
5) BigZuck08 1,091

2024:
1) mjba257 130
2) themaninthejinnahcap 83
3) TechbroMBA 73
4) anbarret 47
5) Irenaeus of Smyrna 21

Remarkable how much more active 2023's cohort is than 2022's. There's several posters with over 1k posts that aren't listed there like Oleg, Electric Circus, and cherry mandarin. Meanwhile I don't think I saw anyone fewer than 200 posts below middleroad

because I was interested to see if I broke into the top 5 for the 2017 cohort, here's that:

1) 2023 Poster of the Year™ John Dule 18,035 (steady)
2) Dr. MB  15,655 (steady)
3) Sestak 13,229 (steady)
4) GM Team Member and Deputy PPT WB 13,221 (up 2)
5) HillGoose 12,805 (down 1)

6) darklordoftech 12,321 (down 1)

looks like i'll be overtaking Sestak for 3rd in the cohort soon.

Top 10 of the 2017 cohort now:

1) John Dule 18,295 (+260)
2) Dr. MB 15,794 (+139)
3) GM Team Member and Senator WB 13,584 (+363)
4) Sestak 13,265 (+36)
5) Hillgoose 12,861 (+56)
6) Tekken_Guy 12,593 (+1,035) [+2]
7) darklordoftech 12,385 (+64) [-1]
8 ) Former President tack50 11,891 (+2) [-1]
9) Oryxslayer 10,715 (+261)
10) America Needs a 13-6 Progressive SCOTUS 8,719 (+70)

no one active is close to overtaking solid in the cohort. RFKFan and Blairite are next but both haven't been online in over 6 months.

If Tekken_Guy continues this rate of posting (~350 posts a month) he'll pass Hillgoose for 5th in the cohort before this time next month, Sestak for 4th in 2 months, and me for 3rd in a bit longer than 4 months.

19) Хahar 🤔 41,731 (+0)
20) President Punxsutawney Phil 41,016 (+641)

† : Deceased poster, RIP
* : Ernest is rumored to be deceased but it has not been confirmed by my knowledge.

seems like some thread Kal and Yankee both posted on must've been deleted? Meanwhile Scott jumps over Grumps and at this rate could jump over Torie for the 11th place spot (since Torie will fall to 11th soon) by the end of the year. Antonio has slowed down but is still on track to take Lewis' spot sometime in the middle of the year. OSR has overtaken Mr. Morden. Dead0man will overtake Torie by the beginning of April.

Meanwhile in the OC-BRTD race the differential in posts is about the same as last month, 412 this time instead of 424.

Doing this made me realize, does anyone know what happened to Xahar? He hasn't logged on in nearly 6 months. I'm a bit worried.

Now that you mention it Xahar is utterly absent.
I hope he's enjoying himself.

I find it weird that the only year where I don't recognize a single user is 2004

Good way to feel old lol because basically all of those people were extremely well-known forum institutions when I signed up. To indulge in a little nostalgia, here are some descriptions of them.

Minionofmidas (more commonly called Lewis Trondheim) was a very knowledgeable poster with a great deal of expertise on Indian culture and history (in both senses). He was of a coterie of posters who became quite alienated in the 2012-2015 period by the high-profile banning of users like jmfcst and Opebo, as well as genuine mod overreach, like the corruption of Inks. He used to post on AAD, maybe still does, and I think he occasionally lurks here. King was part of that group too; the only person around these days who was of that circle is Lief, who is very different both politically (he has moved much to the right) and in personality. I don't find that circle of posters very appealing, but I do think King and certainly Lewis Trondheim were fairly high-quality posters and funny people.

Jfern is a far left poster hated by BRTD; he's still around.

Keystone Phil was a Republican hack, though relatively moderate iirc? Inclined to cope. I believe he worked in PA politics and left the forum because of that. J.J. was another Philly-based right winger, who I believe was inclined to cringeworthy hackery (including memorably misunderstanding probability).

Mr. Morden was a forum icon who tragically passed away a year or so ago. Well-known as an expert on Atlas history, as well as quite the comedian.

True Federalist, better known as Ernest, was a South Carolina poster known for a deep interest in constitutional law and Christian theology, a bit of an eccentric. He was an older poster and stopped suddenly, so some fear that he may have passed away, though it's just as possible that he just decided to leave.

The one with the other weird username was StatesRights, who was a bit before my time but who IIRC was also deeply racist, as you'd expect based on his username. Alcon and Lunar were left-leaning posters whose postingest times were before my time too; Alcon had a reputation as a master debater.

Counting Cody/Aurelius2 as a 2023 poster doesn't really make sense considering that was his replacement account. I suppose multiple others on these lists have more than one account but it's particularly glaring in his case.

I suppose, but I’m just going with the registration date without really taking anything else into account, here.

the dropoff even for top posters after 2021 is notable but probably can be linked to COVID. Less time to post after things subsided.
