If I travel to 1996 and tell the people that Donald Trump was elected president of the United States of America in 2016, and if I don't tell who was the opponent, what would the people think?
Trump was a democrat?
Trump was a republican?
Trump was the first neither democrat nor republican president since 1856?

I would actually guess independent, seeing how well Ross Perot did and you can argue that Perot Reform party kept gaining strength and finally broke through with a win in 2016

I wouldn't rule Trump (I-NY) out with Perot in mind. Trump (R-NY) might be possible because they've ran businessmen before. But me, personally, I would have guessed Trump (D-NY). Zany liberal personality wins against someone dull. I might have answered something like Fmr. Mayor Donald Trump (D-NY) defeats the Vice President to Colin Powell. Maybe Rick Santorum or Olympia Snowe, or some heir to Pat Buchanan.

Pat Buchanan would say that Trump copied his political program.

I wouldn't predict that Trump would be a populist.
