Was there a legal restriction? All I can see is nesting but even thenhe could just have switched precints around between the 2 state senate districts which were both very Safe Republican. It was possible to make a swing Bloomington-normal seat but for some reason he chose not to.

Yes which he chopped up for the state house map into 2 districts making them both Safe R instead of one swing seat and one Titanium R seat.

Thus preventing college students from having a meaningful chance to elect someone they like to a leg that's already Safe D.

It's not about squeezing out one more Dem seat, it's about screwing over college kids.

Hopefully Madigan (or his successor) grants Bloomington/Normal a swingy-to-slightly Democratic-favored seat in the upcoming redistricting.

It would be Clinton +14 by now with 2010 numbers. Maybe Clinton +16 with 2018 population as its one of the few areas growing. Just found it weird that this happened.

Sure the state leg was Safe D but I can't imagine Madigan thought the supermajorities would be Safe D.

Wait nevermind, bagelman is right, galesburg, dekalb, Carbondale are all chopped. the only college town kept whole is in Cole county which is too Republican. I think Uchicago is also chopped between 2 districts.

Proud alum here, and you're right. The majority of campus is in Curtis Tarver's district, but an area west of a particular street is in Kam Buckner's. Funny thing is that the unmentionable school up north is all within a single district that is combined with Kenilworth, Winnetka, Northfield and part of Northbrook.

Were those lines new, or was it a pre-existing division? If Madigan didn't think he could squeeze out secure districts in those areas (or if he didn't think he could rely on the likely representative) then it would have made sense not to annoy the Republicans there unnecessarily - you may as well do them a favour, because you might need to call it in some day.

I mean its not "squeezing" out a secure district. Its literally making a fairer COI based map that helps Democrats in that region.

Anyway you might be right, I think the GOP legislative leader comes from here. Pity muon isn't here rn.
