I still remember Delaware and Missouri being your ultimate bellwethers. How times change.

The state-by-state polls were definitely a little...off that year. Granted, this was the election that brought us the red v blue divide that we know today (just give or take a handful of states) so it must have been fairly difficult to forecast.

Yeah. At this point it was clear Bush had poured in more resources in the state and that Gore had essentially been caught asleep at the wheel. Gore’s environmental record was also widely known at this point so Bush’s attacks were clearly sticking.

It's so weird to see Purple Pacific Northwest just 20 years ago. Especially Washington

How was Bush able to do so well in Ohio?

The older order of Republican total dominance in the west was taking time to phase out.

Delaware still doesn't make a whole lot of sense here considering how it voted in 1996 - it has a similar pattern to New Jersey which NYT rated Safe D.

Bush was up by 4-5 points nationally and ended up spending the last few days campaigning in California, while Gore spend his last few days in Florida.

The Gore team had a unexpectedly strong union backed turnout drive, which caught Republicans off guard.

It's interesting how Nevada was seen as Safe R, and Bush ultimately won it by only 4%, failing to obtain a majority. And the days in which Colorado and Virginia were Safe R are long since gone.

Its crazy how much the country changed in just four years. In 2000, Bush was campaigning in California. In 2004, people joked that California would rather join Canada than have another term of Bush...

It's funny, since Bush did better in CA in 2004 than he did in 2000.

Most of the 2000 election pages are gone. The RCP average was about Bush +2.8. "Portrait of America" (which became Rasmussen) was looking at Bush getting around 351 electoral votes.
