He did poorly in the coal mining counties and did well in the rest of Appalachia in SE Ohio and all of Appalachia in general.

He did poorly in the coal mining counties and did well in the rest of Appalachia in SE Ohio and all of Appalachia in general.
I have noticed a discrepancy in this election between the culturally and economically similar states of Kentucky and West Virginia, which I have generally attributed to a potential “favorite son” vote in areas surrounding Southern Indiana for his vice-Presidential nominee Dan Quayle. This favorite son theory is supported by Bush doing less well in the southeasterly coal counties.
