In all likelihood they're building the phones in Vietnam with a Chinese company.

I'd prefer it being in America, but if it has to be somewhere with low environmental and labor standards, I guess let it be the place we aren't angering directly.

It’s not in China so it’s great and gives the US more and more leverage. If more and more move operations out of China , they will have very little options other than agreeing to a trade deal with strict enforcement provisions (the US shouldn’t accept any deal which doesn’t have strict enforcement provisions)

But his big promise was to bring the jobs back. Shifting them from one cheap labor country to another while creating zero jobs at home is not keeping with that.

Good news. The US needs to grow its Asian alliances. That's the main reason I liked the TPP, as it was an anti-China Asia-Pacific agreement. Maybe the US can become allies with the Vietnam someday. The country's leadership knows that China is a bigger threat to Vietnam than the US.

keep in mind too, that this is just "final assembly"  (I'm actually just assuming that, but it's a very likely thing to assume).  The important bits are still made in the same places they were always made in, which is also NOT inside the PRC, so that's good

I can see how this is better than it being in China, but it doesn't change the fact that they need to move their production to America.

Apart from avoiding the tensions between China and the US, the major reason for this move is likely that wages in Vietnam are much lower than in China.

Moving production away from China (to places with even lower wages) is a shift that has slowly been going on for several years and will only accelerate proportional to the growing wages (and difficulities with finding qualified workforce) in China

Maybe this will make a $700 phone a $500 phone. The other phones are $800 and will be $1000 soon. The only recourse pixel people will have is to get an A or E samsung phone for $200 or get a S samsung or iPhone for $1000 or maybe $1500. People already know that they only get what they can afford.

These phones are likely being built by a Chinese based subsidiary of Foxconn named FIH Mobile in a Vietnamese factory. So it's really a case of America and now China outsourcing jobs, something China has already been doing because wages in China have risen.

>A Chinese-based subsidiary of a Taiwanese company
1. FIH Mobile is based in the Cayman Islands.
2. The Republic of China is a US ally. Even if it can be technically truthful to say that it's a Chinese company, it isn't a mainland company.
3. This might not be a US victory, but it's certainly a Communist defeat.

FIH Mobile Ltd. is an investment holding company, which engages in the provision of vertical integrated manufacturing services for handset industry. It operates through the following geographical segments: Asia, Europe, and America. The firm's services include design and manufacturing of precision tooling and molds; product development; manufacturing of components, modules, and systems; assembly and integration; and after-sales services. The company was founded on February 8, 2000 and is headquartered in Langfang, China.

That's mainland China.

Foxconn is also a Taiwanese (ROC) company regardless, so if the manufacturing and ownership are outside of the PRC's jurisdiction, I'm happy.

I stated that originally, maybe you didn't notice. This particular subsidiary of Foxconn is Chinese based as I stated. And Foxconn has been building factories outside of China for a while now before Trump's trade war because they go where the cheapest labor is for certain products and depending on who the contractor is. You also can not decouple Foxconn and China, I don't want to get into it but it's not as simple as Taiwan and China being rivals and Foxconn being a Taiwanese company. Foxconn's future projects and investments are so entangled with China that you can't simplify the relationship.

Are they only giving the factory jobs in Vietnam to non-communists? Huh
