Winds up to 185 MPH. One of the strongest storms ever.

If this thing gets sustained winds of at least 200 mph, that would make Hurricane Dorian the only known hurricane (in the Atlantic, anyways) since the late 18th century to have become that powerful:

Florida (at least) can breathe a sigh of relief, now that they are no longer in the bullseye.  It looks like Dorian is heading to Georgia and the Carolinas instead.

Here's a thread for Hurricane Dorian prep and discussion. I highly advise my fellow Floridians prepare

I prepared for Dorian decades ago by moving to South Carolina as a toddler.
it knows

I live in the Midlands, not the coast, so given its current forecast track I don't need to worry about it.  Even if were to go inland, my main concern would be rainfall, and I don't live in a floodzone.

I've followed hurricanes for a long time. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see this hit Cat 5. Most forecasts seem to underestimate what these storms reach. Florida is one of the most prepared areas in the world for these storms. Even so, I think that preparedness is about to be heavily tested. Of course, we all hope for the best, but also have to prepare for the worst.

Unfortunately, it looks like I was right. The only thing that changed was that Florida isn't going to be the worst affected. This hurricane tied the record for strongest windspeeds at landfall at 185 mph.

Prepare for the worst. I didn't live through Maria, but my parents did, and they wouldn't wish it on anyone. Not to mention that Dorian is even more destructive and stands a chance to become even stronger before a potential continental landfall scenario.

Gotta suck to be in the Bahamas right now.  A barely moving 180 mph hurricane on top of you for hours even days.

It's a complete post-apocalyptic disaster zone there right now.

This could surpass the damage of Hurricane Andrew.

Florida isn’t the level of dumpster fire PR was management wise thankfully.

There's only so much that can be done in terms of "management" that can prevent damage of this magnitude.

I visited Freeport in 2014,and I can only imagine the disaster that must be unfolding there.

As for me I left Key West about 8:30 and only passed through a couple of small rain bands associated with Dorian. As I write this from Marco Island there's a strong downpour with lightning from Dorian. The fact that rain bands were stretching from Grand Bahama to the Lower Keys and Marco Island gives some idea as to the hurricane's extent.

That's one of the better autocorrects I've seen in a while.

Dorian is now stationary over the Bahamas. I can't imagine the number of casualties.  Sad

Here on the SW FL coast the winds were brisk yesterday from 15 to 20 mph. Early this morning a rain band from Dorian passed through Marco Island, about 250 mi from the center.

The devastation in the Bahamas is beyond comprehension. I'd be breathing a heavy sigh of relief considering my dad's dock was completely submerged even before the storm (thank the King tides) came cutting by us, but the "what could've been" kinda thoughts keep shaking me. Had that storm hit us with the same force it did Freeport, the second floor of my house might have been obliterated.
