Interesting; Markey should retire to let someone new take over (he’s not even a chair, or a particularly valuable senator) but he’d have a reasonable chance of running to Kennedy’s left on a few issues, and I expect it would cause a few ripples in the state.

Expect this is about pushing Markey to retire; as beyond his age he doesn’t have any key profiles that make a primary loss likely (ethical scandals, ideology, demographics etc)

Kennedy would be a good Senator but of course if he was Joe Bouvier he’d be at 1%.

I like Kennedy. Markey is bland, so I guess I'd be behind a Kennedy campaign.

Kennedy is my Congressman, but I hope he doesn't do this. Markey is more progressive, so I support him.

Markey is a leader on environmental issues. He just hasn’t had the chance to serve in a majority for very long.

It looks like a gambit to force Markey to retire under pressure of a primary challenge. Such a primary if it were to happen would certainly be interesting, as Markey is to the Left of Kennedy on most issues, most specifically Marijuana and Climate Change.

Markey will need some good endorsements from folks like Senator Warren and other progressives to dampen down the possible Progressive support Kennedy may have. Meanwhile, Kennedy needs high profile Democrats to stay out, and let his geographic base and name do all the talking.

Its certainly uncallable at this point, but Id put my money on Markey.

as of now, i'd say Tossup if Kennedy jumps in, gun-to-my-head, Lean Markey. Markey is definitely more liberal than Kennedy is, and he was my congressman and is now my senator, so I'd support him. Kennedy would be a fine senator though. Markey would probably do better in rural western/central MA, and the northern/northwestern metro Boston suburbs (his old MA-07). Kennedy would probably do better in the south/southwestern suburbs (his MA-04), the North/South Shores, and the South Coast/Cape and Islands.

This would be a battle royale to see.

Warren endorsed Markey, as did Neal and Moulton.

This^

Hopefully Kennedy runs and loses so we don't have to deal with that family for awhile.

Warren wouldn't endorse. They've both endorsed her for President and it would cause unnecessary dramatics.

I was kinda hoping Juana Matias would run and get the endorsement of Justice Democrats. This is nothing more than trying to get Markey to retire.

He really'd be better off just vying for Warren's seat should she defeat Trump.

According to OpenSecrets, Kennedy has a smaller percentage of his financial contributions from small-dollar donors, which suggests that he might be more vulnerable to corporate donor influence than Markey is (and even Markey's small-dollar donor percentage is rather low). This means that Kennedy is (at least on the surface) not a more progressive alternative to Markey.

I’ve always found Markey to be bland and annoying. And I’ve always liked Kennedy: I ENTHUSIASTICALLY endorse Kennedy in this race and I’d think he would be favored in a head to head with Markey

Kennedy supports the GND

I'm sure he'd be just as good a Democrat as Markey, but I like that Markey has been particularly focused on the GND and actively leading. Any Democrat who would run for Senate in Mass would be an orthodox Dem. Even Steven Lynch isn't who he used to be.

Markey Opposes Trump 85% of the time, Kennedy opposes Trump 88% of the time.

Honestly that is a basically meaningless difference, this challenge is stupid. I endorse Markey and encourage Kennedy to patiently wait his turn rather than primary.
