Wow, I wish I had that kind of money.

Anyway, Dave is right, Bloomberg was going to win easily without spending all that money.

If I lived in NY I would have voted for him for $98.73.  Clearly he overspent.

A waste for him, maybe - but I don't mind it at all when rich people "waste" money.  That 77 million dollars hired campaign workers, bought ads that employed production people, TV station employees, and it goes on and on from there.

He got screwed - I would have paid to vote for him as I think we need more Republicans like him.

Bloomberg's not really a Republican.  He switched parties in 2001 in order to trade a crowded Democratic primary for a clear Republican one.  I doubt he's even changed any of his views to be more in line with his new party.

But let me guess.  You wouldn't vote for him if he'd stayed with the Democrats, would you?

Yes ... that's true of course. Then again, whether this was the most productive way he could've spent the money is another question.

you guys are missing the point...

bloomberg spent the money not because he was fearful of losing, but because he wanted to 'run up the score'.

Bloomberg should fire his pollsters and whatever campaign manager told him that this was a good idea.

See, spending like this is only bad when a Republican does it.

No one said it was bad, just unneccessary. Bloomberg is very well-liked by Democrats (hell, he was a Democrat his whole life and only switched to make his mayoral run easier).

For the record, I agree with you Scoonie - I think that outspending your oponent by such a lopsided margin is bad for democracy, and I'm very disappointed in Mr. Bloomberg, who I like and respect.

If a wealthy individual spends their own money, I really have no problem with it.  I just have no idea why he felt it was neccessary.

See, spending like this is only bad when a Republican does it. As John Edwards said campaigning for Freddie Ferrer - "the people of New York won't allow the mayor's office to be be bought". Mr. Edwards, that same day, crossed the Hudson to campaign for Jon Corzine.

Whatever...

Haha.  Yes, John Edwards will do what he can to be elected, even if it is going against himself.

I always thought that was a rumor... Bloomberg being a moderate democrat who could not make it out of the democratic primary so he decided to switch and run as a republican.

The evidence speaks for itself.  He traded in a crowded primary where he stood a limited chance of success for a relatively clear Republican primary instead.

I guess he had to do something liberal to maintain his street cred in one of the nation's most-Democratic cities.

Yeah because he wasn't doing liberal things before that stupid announcement which was totally pointless.

Bloomberg is liberal.

He's a moderate, with a few liberal tendencies.  There is nothing wrong with being a liberal Republican 'ya know.  He has still been a rather loyal Republican, all things considered.
