The difference is that Allen ran before Trump, so him making the macaca comment was a bigger deal. Nowadays, voters are used to Trump saying outrageous things, so DeSantis' monkey comment seems mild in comparison. After all, it's not like that comment stopped DeSantis from getting elected, and I highly doubt it will sink his inevitable presidential bid.
