1. Reagan when he debated Carter in 1980
2. Bill Clinton in 1992 when he did well with the deficit question (even though the question was worded pretty stupidly which is why Bush struggled)
3. Either Romney or Hillary's first general election debate

Other perhaps more significant debate performances were more about one candidate doing badly (eg Dukakis and Al Gore)
