The 5th debate would be remembered for one moment, and really only one moment:

Senator Sanders, one of the biggest criticisms of medicare-for-all is that it would take away healthcare from union workers and give them what some critics say would be inferior coverage. What do you say about this criticism?

"Well, I think it's disingenuous to say that, we have the GM strike right now, and they just took away the striker's healthcare. The companies are using what should be a basic human right as a bargaining chip to try and stop striking, and keep paying poor wages." (His speech has begun to slow, and his breaths have become raspy and audible through the microphone.)

Are you okay Senator?

I-I... *falls over*

Bernie had suffered a heart attack on stage. Luckily, he made a full recovery within a few days, but the visuals of this essentially ended his campaign. He realized this, dropping out on November 10th, but did not endorse, stating he believed "there are many great candidates out there right now, and I don't want to show any favoritism as of now."

The debate ended early as well.

Polling Nov. 11th

6th Debate

YANG - BUTTIGIEG - BIDEN - WARREN - GRAVEL - STEYER

Gravel opens with a heartfelt message towards former Sanders supporters, asserting that he is the most progressive candidate in the race. It's well received, even within the mainstream media.

Biden says Gabbard's endorsement of Gravel is "proof that his foreign policy stance isn't actually for our good, it's for the good of Russia", Gravel responds by stating that "What Bush did, and what you supported, wasn't for our good either, it was for the good of the fat cat oil tycoons"

Gravel says "I sympathize with the people of Hong Kong, and I ask all who are able to to hit China where it hurts most, and boycott their products". This goes viral and many of his supporters follow this, though it makes little difference in the markets as of yet.

Warren defends herself from Biden's attacks about Union Healthcare once again, slapping him down with "Do you not remember a word our good friend, Senator Sanders, said? Companies are using this to just hold their employees hostage! This isn't fair, this isn't "better than what we'd get from Medicare-for-all", this is unacceptable!"

Who won the debate?
Gravel: 32%
Warren: 25%
Biden: 15%
Yang: 8%
Buttigieg: 5%
Steyer: 2%
Unsure: 21%

Polling Dec. 10th

Elizabeth Warren: 27% (+1)
Mike Gravel: 19% (+2)
Joe Biden: 13% (-4)
Pete Buttigieg: 13% (+2)
Andrew Yang: 8% (+1)
Tom Steyer: 5% (-3)
Undecided: 24% (+1)

Dec. 14: Gravel campaign call
"We need to do something more if we want a chance in Iowa. We're still behind Buttigieg there.

*muffled noises*

Are you sure? That seems like a more "Hail Mary" type of move. I mean, that's what Cruz did 4 years ago...

*slightly louder muffled noises*

Yeah, that's true... he'd certainly get his footsoldiers out to vote for Mike... Ok, I'll call him.

Dec. 14:

Look, what I'm saying is Mike wants to tap you to be VP.

It's a massive gamble for me, you know.

Of course I do. I don't expect you to accept immediately, just keep it in mind.

I will.

Dec. 23:

Hello?

Hey, it's me. I think it's best if we do it. But we'll have to wait until after the debate.

Great. It'll be great to have you on the team.

Polling Dec. 10th

Elizabeth Warren: 27% (+/- 0)
Mike Gravel: 20% (+1)
Joe Biden: 15% (+2)
Pete Buttigieg: 14% (+1)
Andrew Yang: 8% (+/- 0)
Tom Steyer: 3% (-2)
Undecided: 22% (-2)

7TH DEBATE

Yang - Buttigieg - Gravel - Warren - Biden - Steyer

Gravel emphasizes support for several of Yang's positions, saying that they share much of the same vision. This raises many eyebrows.

Gravel pledges full support to the current impeachment procedures, saying that "I may agree with Tulsi on several issues, but the fact she wants to stand with a criminal president is absolutely horrendous. If she wants to pretend like she's a republican with anti-war positions, then she needs to switch parties!"

Biden implies Gravel isn't being sincere. Gravel responds with "I will not accept any of Tulsi's support. Is that good enough for you, Mr. Vice President?"

Yang remains oddly quiet compared to other debates. His most die-hard supporters say that the media is trying to silence him.

Buttigieg stumbles after more issues involving race come up in South Bend. He dodges questions on whether he even cares about the people of South Bend or not.

Steyer's only notable comment was that Democrats who vote against impeachment should be kicked out of the party.

Who won the debate?

Gravel: 40%
Warren: 14%
Biden: 13%
Yang: 9%
Buttigieg: 5%
Steyer: 1%
Undecided: 18%

Pete Buttigieg: 13% (-1)
Andrew Yang: 8% (+/- 0)
Tom Steyer: 1% (-2)
Undecided: 23% (+1)

Jan 7th: Tom Steyer drops out and endorses Buttigieg.

Jan 10th: Yang rally in Ames, Iowa

"This campaign has been about moving our country forward, and we have done this well. However, I have come to the conclusion that we won't be able to do this alone. For that reason, I have decided to drop out of the presidential race..."

Crowd confusion, yelling etc.

"...and will be joining as the Vice Presidential candidate to Mike Gravel!"

Gravel walks on stage to cheers

"Good morning everyone! Andrew and I have decided that to truly change America, our two campaigns need to work together, and Andrew here will make the damn best Vice President our nation has seen! Together, we will make a nation that fights for progress! We will make a nation that won't be sending our own people to die in a far-off war! We will rebuild America!"

more cheers

10th Debate in Charleston SC

-Gravel says in his opening statement that he will only serve one term

-Buttigieg slips up again after another high-profile police shooting of an unarmed African-American teenager. He says "we're doing everything we can to ensure this won't happen again" before Gravel cuts him off, saying "that's what you said the last time, Pete! The more you say that, the more it sounds like you don't care!"

-Gravel rips into Warren, says that she is being cowardly for not directly answering a question on M4A

-Biden says that he has the longest career of helping African-Americans out of anyone on stage, Gravel counters talking about Biden's relationship with Strom Thurmond

APRIL DEBATE HIGHLIGHTS (4/2):

-Gravel and Biden say that their ages shouldn't be of concern, Biden says he will have a VP under 50 years old (potentially hinting at a selection for Buttigieg should he endorse)

-Biden attacks Gravel on his past 9/11 trutherism. Gravel responds saying that his involvement in the movement was "a severe lapse of judgement" but that "I did not believe that it was a stretch to say that the rich and powerful engineered such a thing for their own gain." Overall this exchange was a narrow loss for Gravel, except in online circles.

-Biden drags up Gravel's votes for Russell Long and Robert Byrd in leadership elections, stating that the votes should be "offensive to African Americans and go against Mr. Gravel's idea that he has been a champion on civil rights". Gravel responds saying that Long "is long considered a champion of the people, and the man did not have a racist bone in his body. You insinuating otherwise is offensive to his legacy! And Joe, weren't you the man who said of Robert Byrd, that he was "a tough, compassionate, and outspoken leader"? You seem to have a higher opinion of him than I do! I could bring up any of your friendships with men like Strom Thurmond, who sat on the Senate floor for over 24 hours trying to block civil rights, and honestly Joe, that's far more offensive to African Americans! How about we talk about your crime bill, and how it's led to the mass incarceration of African-Americans?! If you want to talk about offensive, that's about as offensive as it gets!" The exchange went over many younger voters' heads. Overall, Gravel seemed more energetic, and most pundits agreed that Gravel did well in pivoting the attack against Biden.

2020 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION

Many came into the convention with uncertainty in their minds. The first round of voting went as expected.

FIRST BALLOT, FOR PRESIDENT:
Fmr. Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK): 1468
Fmr. Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE): 1401
Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN): 495
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA): 367

Then the second ballot came. Under the new rules, the superdelegates could now vote. It was no surprise which way they leaned.

SECOND BALLOT, FOR PRESIDENT:
Fmr. Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE): 1889
Fmr. Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK): 1523
Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN): 575
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA): 508

This was not looking good. Warren officially withdrew her name from consideration (despite many saying she could be the perfect compromise candidate), pledging her support to Gravel. Her delegates followed, mostly.

THIRD BALLOT, FOR PRESIDENT:
Fmr. Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK): 1996
Fmr. Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE): 1899
Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN): 592
Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT): 6
Fmr. Sec. of H.U.D. Julian Castro (D-TX): 2
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA): 0

Pete met with both of the main candidates. He finally decided, on the fifth ballot, to remove his name from consideration. Biden was pleased when he declared that his supporters should go with their conscience. These delegates were more in his camp anyway, right...?

FIFTH BALLOT, FOR PRESIDENT:
Fmr. Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK): 2215
Fmr. Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE): 2215
Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT): 7
Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA): 5
Mr. Tom Steyer (D-CA): 3
Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN): 0
Fmr. Sec. of H.U.D. Julian Castro (D-TX): 0
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA): 0

a tie. Now it was down to the last few delegates. Sanders delivered a full-throated endorsement of Gravel. But without one more delegate, he wouldn't have a majority...

SIXTH BALLOT, FOR PRESIDENT:
Fmr. Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK): 2222
Fmr. Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE): 2215
Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA): 5
Mr. Tom Steyer (D-CA): 3
Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT): 0
Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN): 0
Fmr. Sec. of H.U.D. Julian Castro (D-TX): 0
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA): 0

nothing changed until the ninth ballot. One delegate switched sides, and that was it.

NINTH BALLOT, FOR PRESIDENT:
Fmr. Senator Mike Gravel (D-AK): 2223
Fmr. Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE): 2217
Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA): 5
Mr. Tom Steyer (D-CA): 0
Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT): 0
Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN): 0
Fmr. Sec. of H.U.D. Julian Castro (D-TX): 0
Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA): 0

Quote
With two thousand, two-hundred and twenty-three delegates, Mike Gravel is the nominee for President of the United States!

The vice presidential ballot saw some attempt at throwing a wrench into Gravel's plans, but it failed.

FIRST BALLOT, FOR VICE PRESIDENT
Mr. Andrew Yang (D-NY): 2303
Fmr. Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE): 1043
Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN): 788
Fmr. Min. Leader of the Georgia House of Reps. Stacey Abrams (D-GA): 306
Fmr. Mayor Michael Bloomberg (D-NY): 5

Biden concedes

Quote from: Joe Biden
Well, I may not be extremely happy with the result, but I do believe that we need to stay united in our goals. We need to beat Donald Trump, and the best way to do that is to support our nominee, Mike Gravel.

Quote from: Mike Gravel
I just want to thank everyone who helped bring this campaign this far, and when we take back the white house from the blood-stained hands of Donald Trump- *cheers and applause*- we will bring democracy back from the brink! We will rebuild America! Thank you!

The first weeks of the campaign were energetic, as Gravel and Yang began a 50-state tour of the country. Meanwhile, Trump had come out of the impeachment trial after he was acquitted, 51-49, with Murkowski and Romney splitting with the party. Anger rose amongst the general public as recent revelations allowed impeachment support to rise to a peak of 54%, very high for these polarized times.

Gravel and Yang do talk about impeachment, but mainly focus on Healthcare and the "rapidly approaching problem" of automation.

The first debate was fast approaching. As the summer turned to fall, the effects of the campaign seemed to be little.

Mike

"The next question is to Mr. Gravel. President Trump has criticized your foreign policy stances as "caving to terrorists and communists." How do you respond to these assertions?"

Ah, a good question for him. This was his main focus still, and he had prepared for this one well.

"Well, I think that it's pretty obvious. Terrorism has become less and less of a threat. In fact, ever since our so-called War on Terror, we've seen groups like ISIS pop up. We were simply lucky that international cooperation was able to stop their advance. The men of ISIS were mainly people who we bombed, or those that we sent home after we invaded Iraq! If we hadn't have gotten involved there, then ISIS, in all likelihood,  would never have come to be! I find it honestly insane that we still have troops in Afghanistan, where 18 year olds are now being sent, people who were born after this war started! It's insane!"

"Mr. Trump, your response."

"Well, I just have to say that Little Mikey over here just isn't being honest. He wants us to get pushed around, and you know, being bullied like that in a wrestling ring... its not America's place to have that happen. We won't let those idiots knocking us around... Mike Tyson used to do that a lot you know, and well, little Mikey over here, he's just uh... wanting us to go backwards, get hit in the head with chairs and such, and I won't let that happen, I can tell you."

Jesus Christ, he was even more incoherent than usual. Why the f*** haven't they invoked the 25th yet?

"You know, Don, I have no idea what you're even trying to say. You sound like you just came out of a boxing ring yourself. Are you sure you don't have a concussion or something?"

The crowd laughed, Trump seemed real damn angry.

"You people are the ones with concussions! Wanting to bring your communist friends over here, eating un-americanly. We can't have that folks. We just can't."

The Other Mike

"Oh sh...nikies."

The Vice President heard his own voice coming from the television.

"Honestly, Greg, if it were up to me, women would just stay in the house where they belong. It's a man's world out there."

A leaked audio tape, recorded a couple of years ago behind doors when his brother was running for Representative. How the f**k did anyone get their hands on this?

Marc Short walked in.

"This is a damn disaster, Mike. What're we gonna do?"

"Deflect. Get Waldman to make some sort of statement about how these aren't my views, and question how the tape even was recorded. Have her say something about wiretapping."

"Waldman just walked out. Says she's quitting."

"Fu-" The Vice President stopped himself.

"Get Miller then. Same spiel."

The vice presidential debate was in five days. He could salvage this, he was sure of it. God wouldn't let socialists take over America again.

Andrew

"It's disgusting. I did not think that our leadership could stoop so low as to denigrate half of the population. That's why Mike Gravel and I are running our campaign, to bring America back together, not drive it apart, like President Trump and Vice President Pence are doing."

Good, good. He nailed that one right on the head, a good mix of unity and attacking Pence.

"Vice President Pence, your response."

"Well, I just have to say that what Mr. Yang just said was an over-exaggeration of this out-of-context quote. And let me also say that your little line there about unity is honestly hilarious. Socialists like you want to create a class war that's just going to drive America further apart, and-"

"Mr. Vice President, let me just be clear here-"

"You didn't let me answer!"

"the only people creating a class war are you and President Trump, who keep the wealth gap growing, and-"

"Look at the lies coming out of his mouth!"

"-and it'll just create a further divide in our country. What we need is to rebuild America, an America where all men- and women- are created equal."

"Can I finish my answer now? Thank you. Look, I can't believe that we're even having this conversation. Of course I support women. I'm loyal to my wife, and honestly, I think that Democratic operatives illegally wiretapped that room trying to dig up dirt!"

A boo rose from the audience.

"Alright, again, we ask the audience to please remain silent. On to our next question..."
