The runoff for this election was extremely close (Garcetti was re-elected by less than 5,000 votes), and I am curious if anyone has any information about what the coalitions for this race were? I thought the OJ trial might have had an effect, particularly on how blacks voted, but I don't know who it would favor. Any information, from maps to news articles, would be greatly appreciated.

A cached Google article from CNN http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:uCrCqZQ_4g4J:www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1996/news/9611/22/2schneider.pow/+&cd=27&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-b-1-d

Garcetti lost the white vote. That's not a surprise, because that's where anger over the Simpson verdict was deepest. He carried African Americans. Not a surprise. Most blacks were not upset with the Simpson verdict.

But Garcetti did especially well with Hispanic voters. He's half Mexican-American, and he made sure Hispanic voters knew that. As we reported yesterday, 1996 was a terrific year for Hispanic turnout.

The Simpson case polarized blacks and whites, but it looks like Hispanic voters were the ones who saved Garcetti.

It'd be more interesting to see a map of the 2000 LA County District Attorney race. Steve Cooley (R) destroyed Garcetti nearly 2-1. You might remember Cooley as the guy that nearly defeated Kamala Harris to become California Attorney General in 2010. He was by far the best performing Republican on the 2010 statewide ticket.
