Scottish National Party: A voice for Scotland

Strategy:

Combining a strong left wing economic message with an anti Brexit and pro-Independence message. Focusing attacks on Labour for having taken Scotland for granted, and on the Tories for austerity and failing to grant an independence referendum.

1st August:

Nicola Sturgeon responds to the calling of the general election positively with a tweet.
Quote
The SNP welcomes this election, a great opportunity for us to get out our strong progressive pro-Independence, anti-Brexit message!

2nd August:

Nicola Sturgeon hits the campaign trail by knocking on doors and talking to voters in Airdrie. Responding to Jo Swinson's comments, Nicola Sturgeon tweets.
Quote
While we view Jo Swinson's unusual offer to allow Scotland to remain in the EU while staying in the UK as a step forward, it isn't sufficient or workable. The SNP is campaigning for an independent Scotland. This is the only way to ensure Scotland remains in the EU. As usual, hot air from the major parties, who want Scottish votes, yet do nothing.

3rd August:

Nicola Sturgeon launches the SNP's campaign and manifesto with a speech in East Glasgow.
Quote
The SNP is the party for the working men and women of Scotland. We have long been ignored by the Westminster political parties. Labour has supported Scottish home rule on paper since their founding, when they used to be a party of working people. Yet, Labour has been in and out of government since then and they only got around to granting us a limited amount of devolution in 1999. This shows how much Labour really cares about Scotland. The Tories have forced crushing austerity on Scotland over the last few years and have, since Thatcher, contributed a huge amount to inequality across the UK. Most recently, the Tories have forced Scotland to endure Brexit, which is something Scotland overwhelmingly rejected. Not only this, but it was also revealed that they viewed key Scottish industries like the oil industry to be low priority. The fact that they have allied themselves with an anti migrant demagogue Nigel Farage shows how far to the right the Tories have swung. They don't represent Scotland, which is a progressive country. The SNP does. We won't engage with the politics of fear, but instead with hope. We will give Scotland a voice in a parliament which has ignored it. We will push for progressive policies such as a living wage, a ban on zero-hours contracts, ending austerity and investing in our public services and supporting the most vulnerable Scots. We will vigorously oppose Brexit, which threatens 80,000 Scottish jobs and argue for the best alternative, an Independent, Progressive Scotland inside the European Union! This is detailed in our manifesto, which you can get a copy of on that table over there.

4th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in East Glasgow. She is asked by a reporter about Alistair Darling's attempt to invoke his Scottish heritage.
Quote
Reporter: Alistair Darling has been emphasizing his Scottish heritage while campaigning in Scotland. Your reaction?
Sturgeon: I think Mr. Darling underestimates the intelligence of Scottish people. Both Blair and Brown were of Scottish heritage, and yet they completely disregarded Scotland and moved rightwards. Darling is just another public school boy who doesn't understand the every day struggles of Scots. His austerity measures during his time as Chancellor paved the way for even worse austerity under the Tories. His 2008 budget was extremely regressive, targeting people earning less than £18,000. He isn't in touch with the working men and women of Scotland.

5th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Central Glasgow. She tweets in response to the stabbing in Northern Ireland.
Quote
I am appalled and saddened by the indefensible stabbing of Councillor Arder Carson. He will be missed.

6th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Clydebank. She tweets, criticizing Labour over Brexit.
Quote
While in Scotland, Darling spoke about the need to stop Brexit. As soon as he crosses into England, all of a sudden he doesn't mention it. This tells you all you need to know about how committed Labour is to stopping Brexit. The SNP is committed to keeping Scotland in the EU.

7th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Alexandria.

Scottish National Party: A voice for Scotland

8th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Greenock. She tweets.
Quote
A couple of years ago, construction was completed on the M8 highway, connecting Greenock to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Vote SNP for more projects to bring our infrastructure up to date to create a more connected Scotland.

9th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Arran. She makes a short speech about the SNP's achievements for island communities.
Quote
The SNP is the party that fights for Scotland, and that includes our islands, like Arran. We have increased the NHS budget for remote communities like Arran by £304 million, we've committed to delivering superfast broadband to all communities by 2021, we've invested £39.2 million to improve 4G coverage and we'll reduce ferry costs between islands and the mainland. All these investments are part of our plan to ensure islanders have the same access to transport and public services as all other Scots. The SNP is the party of a fairer Scotland.

10th August:

Nicola Sturgeon goes to County Armagh in Northern Ireland to speak to border communities and warn against the dangers of Brexit, especially a no-deal Brexit. Speaking to reporters, she explains the reasoning behind her visit.
Quote
The tragic murders of Arder Carson and Lyra McKee show us the dangers what renewed tensions in Northern Ireland have caused. The only way to preserve peace in Northern Ireland is to protect the Good Friday Agreement. Brexit threatens to tear up one of the key components of the Good Friday Agreement, an open border. You have to speak to border communities to really understand how important the open border is to the livelihoods of local people. The SNP is working hard to stop Brexit, especially a hard Brexit proposed by the BlueKIP coalition.

Nicola Sturgeon then crosses the border and visits Dublin where she holds talks with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar focused on improving ties between Ireland and Scotland. She speaks at a press conference after.
Quote
Both Scotland and Ireland have a lot to gain from increased ties between our great countries. We agreed on the dangers of a no deal Brexit and the need to protect the Good Friday Agreement.

Nicola Sturgeon goes to London in the evening.

11th August:

Nicola Sturgeon spends the day in London preparing for the debate. She tweets in response to Labour attacks.
Quote
Labour has attacked the SNP for not being anti-Brexit enough!? Do I even need to respond? Labour hasn't even got Brexit in its manifesto..

12th August:

Nicola Sturgeon takes part in the Sky Debate in London. She speaks to reporters after to debate.
Quote
I think the debate went well. I emphasized what the SNP stands for, an independent Scotland in the EU with a strong social safety net standing against austerity and inequality.

13th August:

Nicola Sturgeon goes to Brussels to talk to EU officials including Commission President Jean Claude Juncker, Council President Donald Tusk, incoming Council President and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel and Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier. After, she talks to reporters.
Quote
I'm here today to express Scotland's position on the state of the Brexit negotiations and speak up for the 80,000 Scottish jobs which depend on our membership of the EU.

Nicola Sturgeon returns to Edinburgh.

14th August:

The SNP holds a press conference in Edinburgh where the SNP's list for the Scotland electoral region is revealed.

Nicola Sturgeon delivers a speech before revealing the candidates the reveal.
Quote
I am extremely proud to reveal our list of candidates this election. All 59 of them believe in an independent, progressive Scotland within the EU. They come from all walks of live, but all of them come with a simple message. Scotland can't be ignored any more. They are a force to be reckoned with in Westminster and will continue to be. If you vote for these talented SNP MPs, I am optimistic that we won't be participating in the next Westminster election as we will be an independent country!

The top 15 candidates.

Scottish National Party: A voice for Scotland

15th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and speaks to voters in East Edinburgh. She makes a short speech about ending homelessness.
Quote
The SNP's approach to homelessness focuses on prevention. Since 2008, we have reduced homelessness by 39%, when UK-wide it has been increasing. We have a 5 year program in place to end homelessness by investing £50 million. Every Scot has a legal right to housing, including temporary housing while they await somewhere permanent. We plan to deliver another 50,000 affordable homes this parliament in addition to 86,000 affordable homes we have delivered since we took power. We are also investing £125 million to mitigate Tory cuts. The SNP is the party which protects the poorest Scots and provides a robust social safety net.

16th August:

While traveling, Nicola Sturgeon passes through Newhouse and tweets about it.
Quote
Just passed through the hometown of Keir Hardie. He founded the Labour Party as a progressive party for working class people. Its a shame that today's Labour Party doesn't live up to that standard. The SNP is the party of the working class.

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Motherwell. She tweets.
Quote
Three years ago, we re-opened the Dalzell Scottish steel plant here in Motherwell. The SNP is committed to protecting the 190,000 Scottish jobs that depend on manufacturing.

17th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Falkirk. Nicola Sturgeon tweets about the Lib Dems' decision not to run in Yorkshire and the Humber.
Quote
The Liberal Democrats' abandonment of the great county of Yorkshire is an extreme demonstration on how much the Westminster elite cares about communities outside the South East of England. Vote SNP to send the message that we won't be abandoned!

18th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Perth.

19th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Dundee. She delivers a short pro-Independence speech.
Quote
In 2016, the SNP was elected to government on a mandate that included an independence referendum if we get dragged out of the EU against our will. After the Brexit referendum, Scottish parliament voted to hold an independence referendum, yet the Tories ignore this and hold Scotland in contempt. The Tories have lost every election in Scotland since 1959, yet continue to act like they speak for Scotland. As an independent country, the only people speaking for Scotland will be the people who it has elected. Scotland has 64% of the EU's oil, worth £4 trillion! With independence, we'd get full control over this wealth and would put the profits in the pockets of Scottish people. An independent Scotland is a Scotland that runs its own affairs, benefits from its own resources and isn't hurt by decisions made in Westminster. Vote SNP, vote for Independence!

20th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Dundee.

21st August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Arbroath.

Scottish National Party: A voice for Scotland

22nd August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Aberdeen. She makes a short speech about the oil industry.
Quote
Although there is much hardship in Scotland, we are blessed with the extremely valuable natural resource, oil. For a long time, Scottish oil has been used to fill the pockets of Westminster and big companies like BP. In an independent Scotland, this wealth will be spread to all Scots. With this extra revenue, we can end poverty in Scotland once and for all! Its our oil!

23rd August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Peterhead. She tweets about the fishing industry.
Quote
The SNP has invested £77 million to support the fishing industry. The SNP is proud to support fishing communities across Scotland!

24th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Fraserburgh. She in response to Labour.
Quote
Labour wants to present itself as the only credible alternative to the Tories in Scotland. The last poll had us way ahead of both Labour and the Tories. We decided to help them out by making a LibDem graph!

25th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Inverness. She tweets.
Quote
I haven't seen David Cameron campaigning much in Scotland. What's he scared of?

26th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Dingwall. She tweets about House of Lords reform.
Quote
A poll has found that 67% of Brits support reforming the House of Lords. I hope Mrs Swinson and Mr Cameron have taken note! The SNP has the strongest stance on this issue, we are the only major party which refuses to sit in the House of Lords. This is an institution that rewards the wealthy while the poor struggle. It is antithetical to the SNP's vision for a progressive and fair Scotland.

27th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Wick.

28th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Stornoway. She tweets about the milkshaking of Jo Swinson.
Quote
I condemn the perpetrator of the attack against Mrs Swinson in the strongest possible terms. Violence has no place in our politics.

Scottish National Party: A voice for Scotland

29th August:

Nicola Sturgeon spends the whole day touring the Western Isles, knocking on doors and speaking to voters. She makes a speech about supporting the Scottish Gaelic language in Staoinebrig.
Quote
Staoinebrig is the most Gaelic speaking town in Scotland and I want to use this opportunity to talk about our plans to support the Gaelic language. Gaelic is an integral part of Scotland's heritage and the SNP recognizes how much of a loss it would be if the language continued to decline after years of neglect. It brings a huge cultural and social value to Scotland and it is a priority of the SNP to continue that. We want to keep increasing the use and visibility of the language to sustain Gaelic for the long term. Not only are there social benefits, but also economic benefits. It has been estimated that £148.5 million extra for the economy can be generated if more businesses offer services in Gaelic, of course, protecting a major part of our culture is more important than that. Since the SNP took office, the number of young people in Gaelic education has increased by 32%. We will continue to support Gaelic education for the benefit of the Scottish people.

30th August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Broadford. She makes a short speech about rural infrastructure.
Quote
The SNP is trying to make a big difference to expand our infrastructure, to connect all corners of our country. Locally, we've invested £6 million to support the local tourist infrastructure for attractions on Skye such as Nest Point and the Fairy Pools. We've committed to expand super-fast broadband to all homes by 2021 and are investing £5 billion to Scotland's rail infrastructure.

31st August:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Fort William. She gives a speech about land reform.
Quote
The concentration of land ownership to a small group of landlords has long been one of the greatest injustices in Scotland. The Highland Clearances were one of the most shameful episodes in Scottish history. Communities torn apart by the greed of a small number of landlords. To come to terms with this past and to open up future prosperity, we have to seriously reform land ownership in Scotland. Only 1200 landowners, or 0.022% of Scotland's population, own two thirds of Scotland. That is a ridiculous level of wealth inequality. The SNP has laid out serious steps towards solving this problem in the Land Reform Act. The law created a Scottish Land Commission to look at the concentration of land and policies to cut inequality in land ownership. It added new protections for tenant farmers against eviction and introduced community right to buy, the right for communities to buy land at good rates. Our target is for 1 million acres of land to be under community ownership by 2020, so all Scots can share in the wealth of our country.

Nicola Sturgeon travels to Manchester in the evening.

1st September:

Nicola Sturgeon spends the day in Manchester preparing for the debate. She tweets in response to Anna Soubry.
Quote
Anna Soubry has criticized under-funding of public services in Scotland. Public services are underfunded across the UK because of austerity, the SNP government is working hard to limit its effects in Scotland. I won't take lectures on austerity from a Tory.

2nd September:

Nicola Sturgeon takes part in the BBC debate in Manchester. She talks to reporters after.
Quote
I think I did a good job, I hope, sending the message that Scotland can do better than what Westminster is offering. We make a positive case for a progressive, independent Scotland inside the EU, and I believe it is gaining traction.

3rd September:

Nicola Sturgeon returns to Scotland. She knocks on doors and talks to voters in Ayr. She tweets.
Quote
I'm in Ayr today. We're investing £695 million in NHS Ayrshire, £120 million towards local schools and increased investment in childcare and early years education. The SNP is investing in all corners of Scotland.

4th September:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Irvine.

Scottish National Party: A voice for Scotland

Up next, a party political broadcast from the Scottish National Party.

Many Scots have long noticed the brokenness of Westminster, its indifference to the people of Scotland. For a long time, we've trusted Labour to stand up for the Scottish working class but the Scottish people have shown that they won't be taken for granted by Westminster parties.

The Tories and have implemented cuts after cuts on our vital public services. These policies were actively endorsed by the leader of Change UK, and in part by the leaders of Labour and the Liberal Democrats. These savage cuts started during Alistair Darling's reign as chancellor. It is the SNP which will lead the charge against austerity.

Brexit threatens 80,000 Scottish jobs, that is 80,000 families put in extreme uncertainty and in many cases, poverty. Leaked memos reveal that the Tories don't view Scottish jobs as high priority, we do. The Westminster parties have been facilitating Brexit, it is the SNP who will make Scotland's voice heard. Labour claims to oppose Brexit, but are very silent on this when campaigning in Pro-Brexit areas, why?

You may be thinking, "We know Westminster doesn't care about Scotland, but what is the SNP actually doing? Aren't you just obsessed with Independence?" Here is what the SNP has been doing over the last 12 years.

We have scrapped tuition fees, built or done up 750 schools and helped create thousands of new apprenticeships. We want our youngsters to be able to get the education they need, regardless of their class background.

We've built 70,000 new affordable homes so that more Scots can afford to have their own place.

We've offered free childcare to parents who want to work.

We've scrapped prescription charges and 12,000 more people are now working in the NHS in Scotland.

We've put more police on the streets at a time when the Tories have cut police numbers in England and Wales. Crime is down 42% since we took power.

We've created a National Investment Bank which invests in communities across Scotland, understanding the importance of investing in the people of Scotland.

We've expanded infrastructure across Scotland with the Queensferry crossing, the Greenock motorway and expanded transport links to the Highlands and Islands, with the environment in mind.

The SNP offers a real alternative to the Westminster parties which have long ignored Scotland's needs. We believe in an independent Scotland which looks after its most vulnerable and is an active member of the EU. Find out more at snp.org.

Scottish National Party: A voice for Scotland

5th September:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Kilmarnock. She tweets.
Quote
Good news! The Prime Minister has finally visited Scotland for the first time in the campaign.

6th September:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Glasgow.

7th September:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Glasgow. She gives a brief speech about healthcare.
Quote
The SNP supports the NHS proudly, despite the constant attacks it has faced. We have increased spending on health to £13.9 billion at a time when the Tories are cutting in the rest of the UK. Things are improving in almost all areas, particularly A&E, more staff, patient satisfaction, pay for staff, dentist registration, cancer mortality is down. We have made prescriptions free, allowing people to save money on essential medication and we have put a higher priority on mental health than the rest of the UK. The SNP's record on the NHS is clear, we are strong supporters of the NHS and want to improve healthcare access and reduce costs further in future.

8th September:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Glasgow. She gives a speech about the drug emergency.
Quote
Unfortunately, we have a major problem with increasing drug-related deaths. across the UK. How does the SNP plan to tackle this emergency? We need a public health approach to drug policy which recognises the need to look at more root causes of substance misuse by tackling inequalities and intervening earlier in order to protect people at risk. However, we have faced opposition for this approach from the Tories in Westminster, who have blocked the creation of a Supervised Drug Consumption Facility which allows for a more gradual transition for drug users to end their addiction. This is where the upcoming election is important. We need more SNP MPs in Westminster who will push for more devolved powers and allow for an approach to the drug emergency which helps drug users lose their addiction with dignity, rather than treating them as criminals.

9th September:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Motherwell.

10th September:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Edinburgh. She tweets in response to attacks from Anna Soubry.
Quote
The SNP has been working hard to limit the effects of the cuts which were supported by Mrs Soubry.

11th September:

Nicola Sturgeon knocks on doors and talks to voters in Dundee. She gives a speech on how devolution has improved Scotland.
Quote
This year marks two decades since the refounding of the Scottish parliament in 1999. This was a major milestone in Scotland's long history, and a huge step forward. As a result, Scotland is a much more politically engaged country than before. Scotland now has a lot more control over issues that affect it and this is something we should all celebrate. This goes to an even deeper level than the massive policy strides the SNP government has made since taking power, such as free tuition and affordable housing. These progressive ideas and policies represent a very progressive country in a way that was unimaginable in the Thatcher years. Westminster is crumbling under the pressure of constant posturing over Brexit and continuing cuts, neither of which Scotland voted for. Ultimately, for Scotland to continue on a progressive path, active in the EU, protecting vulnerable people, Scotland must break from Westminster. Unfortunately, Westminster won't allow us to have a vote on independence and this shows the importance of these elections. More SNP MPs means a stronger voice for Scotland's voice over Brexit, devolution and the important question of self determination and independence.

The Scottish Lion has rawr-ed again!

Nicola Sturgeon responds to the election results.
Quote
The results tonight in Scotland are very powerful, they give the SNP a mandate to demand real change in Westminster. We got 42%, a 28% lead over the nearest Unionist party. Pro-independence parties achieved 52% of the vote in total. If this doesn't send a message to Westminster that Scotland wants to decide its future, I don't know what will. The SNP will not agree to back a government which doesn't finally allow the Scottish people a vote on their future.
