-Worked for Strom Thurmond and was a prosecutor
-U.S. Atty. under Reagan

McMaster has a impeccable resume like Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

Why isn't he presidential material?

Except DeWine won most of his races, unlike McMaster, as evident from your very own summary.

People with last names starting with "Mc" don't tend to do well in presidential elections for some odd reason.

Uh, we only have two examples of that in modern times (McGovern and McCain), and both were basically doomed from the start given the economic and partisan climate at the time. Not exactly the largest sample size, I think other factors than the “Mc” were probably more important.

McAdoo, MacArthur, MacBride, McCarthy, McCloskey, McCormack, McCotter, McKinney, MacNider. Usually the McPresident Curse gets them before they can even get nominated.

McMaster's unsuccessful races came at a time where South Carolina was far more Democratic at the local level than it is now, and he ran against formidable incumbents (Sen. Fritz Hollings, Lt. Gov. Nick Theodore).  That being said, he strikes me as a guy who can win if he's the GOP nominee, but who has marginal PERSONAL popularity.

He's an older statesment, like most Southern GOP governor, that haven't been a factor in GOP national politics. Only Graham, McConnell and Thune have made an impact in the Deep south, thus far, that make them natl figures.

South Dakota is the deepest south of all, since it is right in the name.

Compared to the likes of Nikki Haley, Tim Scott, and Lindsey Graham, he’s
Kind of an afterthought as far as South Carolinians go on the presidential radar.

Pretty far down the totem poll as far as South Carolina presidential contenders go, not only are Haley and Scott more notable, but even Graham and Mulvaney are probably stronger presidential candidates than he would be. He's also pretty old, having just turned 72
