As we all know, Henry Wallace when he ran as a progressive in 1948 got no electoral votes, but he did run nearly the same amount of votes as Strom Thurmond, who won 4 states, and performed rather well in the other 7 Confederate states.

There's no comparison between the two. Thurmond ran only in the South (with Truman not even being on the ballot in Alabama nor listed as the official Democratic nominee in Mississippi), thus being able to get electoral votes, where a significant part of the electorate was disenfranchised. Votes for Wallace were spread across the country.

I've actually made a map a while ago of second places by county in 1912 (couldn't find the data for TX and GA, and some random white counties)



Red: Wilson
Green: TR
Blue: Taft
Maroon: Debs
Yellow: a Prohibition dude I won't bother looking up now
