Someone 22 now was born in 1997, which is early Gen Z by most definitions, the latest I've seen Millennial births set is 1998, so at least all freshmen are. Yet college towns and campus precincts did not have any Republican trend in 2018 (and remember trend is compared to the national swing)...so what gives?

I was always pretty skeptical of the notion that today's college students are talking about how much they love Ben Shapiro in between keg stands.

Republicans like to intimidate the Democrats and delude themselves when they are losing at something.  And the Democrats love to worry and despair when they are winning at  something.

When the Republicans really lose they slink away with their tail in between their legs and hide for a while....

And when the Democrats really win they like to offer some of the winnings to the Republicans.

This argument will become embarassing within a couple of years, but it will remain a Qanon and KKK and neo-nazi talking point for a little while, and then it will finally die.

Because there is absolutely no factual data backing this up at all.  It's just right wing trolls filling right wing media with crappy conspiracy theories that conservatives eat up like halloween candy.

No one's saying that.

Especially since generational thresholds are totally arbitrary and it's pretty absurd to expect voting patterns to jump drastically from Millennials in just a few years. This did not happen with Generation X, the youngest Gen Xers are also pretty Democratic.

I do vaguely recall that talking point now. It was basically based on drawing trends from data points and assuming those trends would continue indefinitely.

Of course this fallacy shows up here a lot too.

It's obviously due to voter fraud. Gen Z is the most conservative generation in history; Grassroots told me so.

Bush actually did win with young voters while loosing with old voters in 2000, but I suspect that’s because young voters feared Tipper and Lieberman, not because they liked Bush’s evangelicalism.

By 2004, it appeared that Republicans had peaked with younger voters and by 2006, they appeared to be crashing with them. The way that the Republicans have been able to win since then is a combination of voter apathy and pensioners swinging hard to the right as either i) the Overton window on social issues keeps expanding on the left or that ii) either the have been convinced that they "can't afford" new social programs/spending or that they are competing with new social spending to keep their pensions.

Well, you see, there was this one white nationalist on Twitter who claimed to be Gen Z, so that's all the evidence I need.

"Young voters" in 2000 didn't mean "Millennials" yet, and "old voters" in 2000 still included much of the Greatest Generation.

I'm not sure how this data was compiled or modeled, but the person who posted it is very smart and I trust that its in the ballpark... Keep in mind its only Whites, and a big part of the story is that younger generations are far less white than older ones.

The claim that Generation Z was going to be outright right wing was always cherry picking / nonsense, but they might be a bit more conservative than the tail end of the Millennials (at least those born in the mid 90s).

I think there's some polisci research that states that its around the age of 18 that partisanship/political beliefs lock in most strongly. If that's the case, this graph makes perfect sense... the most Democrat leaning ages are people that turned 18 either in Bush's second term when he was extremely unpopular, and in the first couple of years of Obama's presidency.  Based on this, I would also fully expect persons born in 1999-2002 to end up being quite a bit more Democratic than those born from 1996-1998 or so...

There was a lot of talk here and elsewhere that Romney had won the teenage vote in 2012, and that seems very silly now.

As long as your party keeps offering up dead-end candidates like Donald Trump, younger generations will continue to hate Republicans.  And who can blame them?
