Places like Compton and Inglewood were mostly white up until that 1960s. Orange County's growth included a lot of white people who start leaving Los Angeles' suburbs. For those that didn't leave Los Angeles County they either moved to the eastern part of the county or to the San Fernando Valley. For a long time the San Fernando Valley was the power source for Republicans in the City of Los Angeles and that's where most of Reagan's votes came from.
