It seems like getting elected governor is monumentally much harder than getting elected lieutenant governor for black candidates.

It's the Ivory ceiling. In some states the Lt Gov is picked by the Gov to run as part of a ticket and isn't on the ballot separately.  I know that's the case in KY where Hampton has been ditched by Bevin.  She was actually calling for all "prayer warriors" this week because her deputy chief of staff was fired (apparently she has no control over such things).
