Which State-level Republican will the party sacrifice this time?

Endorsed! He's among the top-3 of current governors. Looking forward how King Andy trounces a far-left winger plus the Republican candidate again. However, I'm a little conflicted since I want Queen Kathy to step into the governorship as well. Hopefully she makes it one way or the other (Cuomo would also be a great Attorney General pick for President Biden).

Whew, this thread took off.

I think Cuomo's handling of COVID has been okay so far, coming from a Democrat. It hasn't made me want to vote for him any less, though, I already would support a primary challenger from the left.

As for the future of NY (assuming Cuomo enters the Biden cabinet or something), while I would prefer a progressive Governor, I think people overrate the ability of someone like AOC or Jumaane Williams to win a statewide primary.

The second Central and Western NY Democrats dig up their records and stances, they'd gladly vote for someone like Hochul, or other establishment Democrats.

Cynthia Nixon and Zephyr Teachout ran competent primary campaigns because they didn't do things which painted them to the average voter as radical, something which many of NYC's Democratic Socialists (as much as I love them) have failed to do.

They have such a weak future in statewide politics because they focused so much on getting their first-ever seat, and going big and bold in communities which are far-more politically friendly.

He tried to cut Medicaid during the pandemic. This should be inexcusable.

That's the entire NYS Democratic Party establishment, we learn to live with it after a while. (unfortunately)

Lewis County Sheriff and Republican Mike Carpinelli is IN (he announced on June 8th lmao)

Carpinelli appeals to blue collar Italians-Irish, typical Northeastern GOP bloc.

Carpinelli, Molinaro, Astorino, Paladino, Faso appealed to the Northeastern GOP Italian bloc, although a lot of Italian-Americans are Democrats too.

Likely/Safe D.

Harry Wilson would hold Cuomo to 10 points.

But a Republican doesn't win NY until probably 2026

NY is too blue

Checking the Wikipedia page, looks like we have another new Republican, this time only expressing interest.

"Business Women, Dog Lover" Jenn Korszun, a Senior Sales Representative for a software company.

Republicans in this state are so bad lmao

According to Axios, the Joe Biden campaign is considering Governor Cuomo for Attorney General.

I forgot to put this one up!

Dem. State Sen. Alessandra Biaggi threatened to primary the Governor a couple of weeks ago.

As for the AG situation - if Cuomo just heads for Washington, it will surely shake up the NYS Democratic leadership in terms of giving them a big surprise. Hochul is a safe pick, but I'd also bet on a few progressive small officeholders running and maybe gaining traction.

A "growing number" of Republicans are calling for Fox News Weatherwoman Janice Dean to run against Cuomo, and she's been endorsed by Megyn Kelly. Notable that she's releasing a book this March as well, though it appears to be apolitical.

https://nypost.com/2021/01/23/fox-news-janice-dean-called-to-run-against-cuomo-in-2022/

I could see her doing REALLY well in Western and Upstate NY, but she'll get destroyed elsewhere. Cuomo wins by a wider margin than he did in 2018.

I'd say the fact that she's the only potential GOP nominee with a major national presence makes her the frontrunner by far, compared to Carpinelli and Gibson.

Why does Cuomo win by a larger margin than in '18? Because she is from Fox News?

Also, she would destroy Cuomo on Long Island...the suburban soccer moms would like her.

Cuomo would still win by 10-15 points, but Dean would be his biggest challenge because she has no political baggage. Her husband is a FDNY firefighter, and she'd win the police/fire votes.

Her arguments against him seem far more baseless and weaker than Molinaro's, and while being an outsider could be a benefit in some cases, I don't see her going from weather news to navigating the county-level politics in a way that leads to her having a good performance.

She'll try to do the "Trump" thing and just completely flop.

Janice Dean was on Fox recently with State GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy discussing the nursing home controversy:

Looks like the nomination is hers to lose.

Cuomo allegedly threatens Assemblyman Ron Kim over nursing home scandal, "I can destroy you".

This is getting out of hand and Nick Langworthy is loving every second of it.

Given the FBI investigation that just broke, yes. Perfect timing!

"The probe by the U.S. attorney's office in the Eastern District of New York is apparently in its early stages and is focusing on the work of some of the senior members of the governor's task force, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter who is not authorized to comment publicly."

Somebody high-up needs to sit Cuomo down (a-la Goldwater & Nixon) & tell him it's over: Idk if we're necessarily at "resign or you'll be impeached & convicted/removed" levels yet, but at the very least, he needs to be informed that he won't have the party's support in seeking a 4th term next year. If he chooses to step aside for the good of the party like David Paterson did for him once upon a time, then Kathy Hochul can be to him what he was to Paterson. If not, then Jumaane Williams or maybe even Tish James (if she thinks she can pull it off) needs to launch a primary challenge yesterday.

I wish Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer would take this role. Their word matters as Biden is prez and de facto leader of the party, and Schumer is the most powerful Dem in NYS. And neither of them were previously known as Cuomo critics. If they abandon Cuomo, he's in trouble. Unfortunately, Mr. Cuomo's ego won't allow him to admit is failures and resign.

Biden doing so would be yet another parallel to the Paterson situation, as it was Obama who was the Goldwater to Paterson's Nixon in terms of making it clear to him that the party was gonna be supporting Cuomo over him in 2010.

The only major difference is that Paterson was just unpopular for some reason and didn't have a scandal of this magnitude. Even Spitzer's scandal was kind of a joke compared to Cuomo.

Spitzer's scandal is routine GOP behavior to this day.

He only resigned because Fox News and Roger Stone spun it 24/7.

Tom Reed voted for the equality act the other day (So did Katko, but that's expected).

Prepping his bipartisan cred for a blue state gubernatorial run or scared of redistricting?

Redistricting. He's too red otherwise.

I predict Cuomo either announces he's ending his re-election bid of gets primaried by Tish James. Either way I think Tish James is very likely the next Governor if she chooses to run.

Speaking of which...do we have a primary challenger?

She'd beat him no doubt.

Cuomo has been accused, and photographed, of an unwanted sexual/flirtacious advance, for a THIRD time in one week.

Rep. Kathleen Rice has called for Cuomo's resignation.

Does anyone think this is a potential setup?

In this cancel culture phase of the #MeToo era, there's always potential that all of these allegations and the release of the photo were orchestrated - but that doesn't change the fact that they are allegations worthy of investigation, and tonight's photo being a cringeworthy, damning piece of evidence against Cuomo.

Setup or not - it's time for him to go.

Yeah, the guy touched on that in his latest update:

I dont see why Hochul wouldnt run for a full term. She'd likely get it.

Hochul would run, and I say a crowd of probably 5-10 candidates as well.

Alessandra Biaggi, Tish James, Jamaal Bowman, Ritchie Torres, Byron Brown, Tim Kennedy, Sean Patrick Maloney, Max Rose, AOC, Chuck Schumer, Hillary, Lindsey Boylan, all have a reason why running for Governor makes sense; on top of NY being a pretty attractive state right now for a post-COVID recovery and the inevitable legalization of sports gambling and marijuana.

My leading bet right now:

No Cuomo resignation, but by May he announces he will not be running in 2022.

Byron Brown wins the primary, given the challenge he's facing right now from DSA and Working Families-endorsed India Walton (who will go on to become Mayor of Buffalo), and Brown goes on to face Janice Dean in the general. Kathy Hochul remains Lieutenant Governor, and Tish James remains NY AG but will face a challenge from a progressive.

Brown, Hochul, and James all go on to win and develop post-COVID NY similarly to how Brown did Buffalo post-recession; with the help of [insert new NYC Mayor].
