I can’t wait to see your reaction when Trump wins IA by more than OH in 2020 and Republicans hold IA-SEN by more than GA-SEN/TX-SEN/etc.

Anyway, the result of the gubernatorial race would have been far less surprising (or rather, not surprising at all) if the Republican ticket had been Husted/DeWine instead of DeWine/Husted. I get that Renacci ran an awful campaign, but I didn’t expect Cordray to underperform Brown by that much against someone like DeWine.

OH has always been a GOP-leaning state.  It’s just hilarious that this forum thinks that carries some negative implication about the state.  OH is a very large state with multiple big cities and several nice suburban communities (which largely vote Republican, can you believe it?!).

OH + GOP = Purple heart

The Ohio Democratic Party has always been very reliant on winning WWC voters by pretty good margins, especially in the northern half of the state. When they start to lose support in that demographic, it is difficult for them to overcome that even in otherwise favorable circumstances.

IA will get Dems from 266 to 272, IA is becoming a bellweather again like in 2012, instead of OH

Cordray ran a lackluster campaign and didn't inspire minority turnout.

For one thing, Russia interfered. For another, the media cheered Republicans.

For one thing, Russia interfered. For another, the media cheered Republicans.

Both of these are objectively false.

Democrats did poorly in Ohio because it's rapidly trending Republican, not because the media cheered on Republicans or because of muh Russia.

Hilary was a female trying to win OH as well, and Betty Sutton has been trying to become governor for the longest. Should Beto or Biden become nominee, the state may vote differently.

Harris will be viewed as another Hilary

It’s pretty simple. The state has shifted right. OH democrats need exactly the type of voter Trump peeled off the democratic coalition to win here. I don’t say that as someone happy about it either. Blaming Cordray would make me feel better, but he ran a decent enough campaign. I mean who else were we gonna put up anyway? Kucinich?
