Why would Biden choose a running mate who

1.  has relatively weak qualifications (especially given Biden is 76 years old)
2.  has a tremendous amount of political baggage (Assad, hard-core homophobic past, tends to draw support of Russian and white nationalists, blamed "both sides" for the government shutdown, etc.)
3.  does nothing to solve Biden's problems with the hard-core Democratic base and whose selection would be massively divisive with the Democratic base to the point she might cause a convention walkout
4.  is not a proven commodity on the national stage
5.  has been vitriolic in her criticism of the Obama Administration's foreign policy

I don't think Biden would be this stupid.  It would be more foolish then McCain's selection of Sarah Palin.  No wonder so many right-wingers are hopeful he will choose Tulsi.

Most people of color only reinforces the 235 EC votes that Hilary got last time and Kaine couldn't get her the midwest and the cluster of states Hilary needed. Biden needs an experienced Veep

Is there a non-zero chance that he taps her to be his VP if he's the nominee? Yes.

Will he? No.

Joe Biden is still the frontrunner, and given his age(78 at inauguration day in 2021) his VP pick will be of particular import, since there's a decent chance he either doesn't run for reelection in 2024, or dies in his first/second term.

Thoughts?

I have a feeling that he'll pick Catherine Cortez Masto.

CCM is head of DSCC and has no plans on being Veep. Depending on this EL Paso shooting Beto, Bennet and Ryan as well as Harris and Klobuchar are being considered

A Biden-Ryan ticket wouldn't automatically give them Ohio and - mostly important - would depress democratic turnout.

Gabbard would easily be his best choice give him a young female and strong vp and appeal to progressives

Dark horse: Congresswoman Nanette Barragan. She's young and latino.

My favorite would actually be Pete Buttigieg, but this isn't very likely. He probably gets a cabinet job. Uncle Joe will almost certainly pick a woman. With that being said, I have a feeling the chance for a Biden/Harris ticket has significantly dropped. I'm not even sure his choice will be a black woman, he's already doing well with that demographic. Maybe Tammy Baldwin, CCM or even Liz Warren are viable options. Of Liz comes in second and avoids getting nasty, I could see them teaming up for the general election.

A dream for Democrats would probably be if he asked Michelle Obama to be his running mate. But I guess she has absolutely no interest to run, even if she would do it if needed to defeat Trump. I just hope he doesn't pick Stacey Abrams. She should run against Cheatin' Brian again.

No.Gabbard and Ryan wouldn't depress turnout like a Gabbard Veep selection would.

Biden might not need Ryan, he has been leading Trump in Ohio

If it wasn't for the fact that she is less well-known, than Hilda Solis would be a great dark horse pick.

Said it before and will say it again - Duckworth is definitely the best pick for him. Woman, generational change, Midwestern, minority, great personal story.

Baldwin, Duckworth, and Klobuchar all seem like incredibly logical picks, to the point that it's hard to make a list without them. Duckworth seems like the best all-around, with a very compelling personal story and origin (and given America's history having FDR as a beloved leader I can't say that being wheelchair-bound would be a horrible stop), but her campaigning history is sort of spotty (though getting better -- she significantly under-performed expectations in 2006 and 2012, but did better in 2014 and 2016) and she has very young children, so she may not want to commit to a grueling national campaign. Baldwin makes a lot of sense on paper as someone who over-performs in Wisconsin, a state that Democrats are desperate to win; Klobuchar seems like a version of Baldwin who is more motivated (and over-performs harder) but also has more personal issues and is from a neighboring state.

Beyond that it's hard to say. Whitmer might be the favorite if she'd been in office just a little longer, but Biden remembers the Palin debacle and I don't think anyone from the 2018 class is going to be chosen. He's a conventional enough thinker not to go to the House, either. Among other possibilities, if the election is strongly foreign-policy-oriented someone who's stayed very active in protesting Trump's foreign-policy is Obama's former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson; Johnson also checks enough boxes that I think if he's interested he'd be able to be one of the finalists.

We can assume with high levels of certainty that Biden VP pick would be female. Cortez-Masto would be a nice one, but I think that doesn't happen. Given the current state of Democratic Party women like  Barragan or Abrams are more realistic names to me.

Yes, there will never be a wheelchair bound person in the Oval office.

I think it will be one of the Midwest women (Duckworth, Klobuchar, Baldwin, or Whitmer).   And if I had to pick, I would go with Baldwin.  She has a proven GOTV track record in Wisconsin.
