November 1863, and Lincoln travels to Gettysburg to make the Gettysburg Address. A year later he is re-elected as president only to be shot dead in early 1865.

My question is: If Lincoln hadn't been killed who would he have "tapped" for the 1868 GOP nomination, and what would have happened if he had run?

The "no third term" calls would have killed him, IMO.

Radical Republican Senator Charles Sumner would have been able to win the nomination due to GOP discontent with Lincoln's "amnesty program" for the rebels.

He and running-mate Senator John Sherman of Ohio would destroy Democratic Governor Horatio Seymoure in the general election.

Grant would simply head back to Galena, Illinois, and serve as honorary Mayor so he could build a road from his home to the depot.
