Well yes, of course a minority government trying to get the power to tax and spend without parliamentary approval for nearly two years is a power grab. No need for the scare quotes.

Oh my god...

Over 10 killed in shooting rampage in Nova Scotia.

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/alleged-gunman-and-rcmp-officer-among-the-victims-of-nova-scotia-shooting-sources-say

This is so terrible...

EDIT - NOT an incel. Married to a man and has two children.

I read that he was wearing some sort of Mountie looking uniform and driving a fake police car.

It is indeed a tragedy. What kind of point are you trying to make by insinuating he was an incel?

A lot (but not a majority) or North American school shootings have been incels, also 2 or 2 years ago was the last big killing rampage like this that I remember in Canada. It was an incel in downtown Toronto running people over with a vehicle.

Not trying to insinuate he's an incel at all. Rather, we're so used to incel violence now that I half-expect it when I hear of a rampage. Just wanted to give the proper info for anybody wondering if this may or may not possibly be an incel.

Deadliest mass shooting here in 31 years.

Don't post his name or picture. Post Cst. Stevenson instead.  She died for us today doing her job. May she and everyone else rest in peace.

Given the extensive death toll and massive media coverage, I have decided to start a thread on the subject here

So Trudeau is banning these weapons why exactly? They weren't the type of gun used in the shooting.

Some of my rationale for opposing measures like this in the US don’t apply in Canada but still not the best time to announce this.

It was in the Liberals' election platform & has been in the works for years, so it's not really a response to the recent shootings per se; it was moreso just accelerated due to recent events, if that makes sense.

Because letting people own assault weapons has no benefits and substantial drawbacks?

Can you point to these said substantial drawbacks as a means of policy?

Well we just had our worst mass shooting in our entire country's history and the perpetrator used exclusively illegal weapons that were almost certainly smuggled in through the reserves (the most famous is the Akwesasne Mohawk reserve where they're known to possess fully automatic AK47s) so this law is going to do precisely nothing to prevent the same thing from happening again. A few weaselly outlets claimed that he used a "legally registered firearm" in reference to a sidearm he took off the body of an RCMP officer he'd gunned down.

Trudeau can pass all the laws he wants but they won't stop any serious killer.

I have no problem with the idea that the measures will be ineffective. But that doesn't mean that there's any good reason it should be legal to own an assault weapon.

This reasoning is ridiculous. It is correct but it misses the point entirely. If somebody REALLY wants to rape or steal or murder, and they have ample time and resources, they will accomplish it. It's impossible to stop. BY NO MEANS WHATSOEVER though does that mean that we don't try to make it more difficult, punish it harshly, etc etc.

Which might be a compelling argument if the ban was actually an assault weapons ban. Trudeau didn't ban a particular capability or class of weapon, he banned a list of models, many of which were WW2 era antiques. There are still many so-called 'assault weapons' that one can purchase legally at many retailers.

The ban is like if someone died from drinking too much vodka, and the government responded by banning merlots and Budweiser, said it was prohibition and called it a day.

Yes, this is the achilles heel in progressive gun policy in Canada. Much of Canadian violent gun crime is committed with illegal weapons smuggled in from America. Any serious violent crime policy needs to address that issue, but attacking gun smuggling is costly and has potential to create awkward situations for a progressive government, so we get these quasi symbolic gun bans instead.

I am surprised that nobody on here has talked about Duterte having ABS-CBN shut down a few days ago.
