As I think about it, I don't think they could go past the combo of the Tsunami, Katrina and the Pacific earthquake.

http://www.time.com/time/personoftheyear/archive/covers/1927.html

Here is a complete listing of Time's Person of the Year by decade with cover photo, starting in 1927 when Charles Augustus Lindbergh was given the honor of being Time's first ever Person of the Year.

Somehow I am betting on the Pope.  Nature might also be it, though.

Mother Nature would be the worst pick they could make. They need to get away from picking groups or thing, and actually pick the person who most made a difference on the planet this year. I think a sleeper pick would be Harry Reid.

Mother Nature is certainly the front runner this year.  Between the tsunami, Katrina, and the Kashmir earthquake, we've had three major natural disasters that in a normal year would each easily be the worst of the year.  Katrina also affected U.S. politics tho I think that impact is overrated.

The key word there was 'person.' Smiley

I suppose William Rehnquist isn't a candidate?

Concept of the year, 2005: Mother Nature!

For person, I'd go with either Reid, Michael Brown, or a more positive figure directly involved with Katrina.

Go with a more positive figure.  We need a lift!

There certainly is precedent for TIME picking non-people: "Endangered Earth" was chosen as Planet of the Year (1988), and the computer was chosen as Man of the Year (1982).

What about Katrina?

Just Katrina. Woman of the Year.

I think if they go with Katrina, they'd also include the Tsunami and the Earthquake.

Reminds me of the Captain Planet powers. Now we just need Love.

Anyway, the time 'x' of the year awards are kinda worthless now, anyway.

Do you think this means that Time has it narrowed down to these people?   http://www.time.com/time/personoftheyear/2005/walkup/

TIME lost any credibility after chickening out in 2001.

LOLZ at some of the comments on the "talk back" section:

Cindy Sheehan, mother of a son killed in this immoral and illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq, is a symbol of the grief and sorrow of America. In her stand against war and against Bush, she has done more to galvanize the peace movement than any other person in 2005. History will place her alongside Rosa Parks. She should definitely be TIME Magazine's "Woman of the Year."
Reese Danley-Kilgo
Huntsville, Ala.

U.S. Rep. John Murtha -- whose historical proposal to withdraw our troops from Iraq, although extreme, will surely be regarded by future historians as the true turning point of the war.
Paul Merz
Long Beach, Wash.

Patrick Fitzgerald should be the Person of the Year. He is a dedicated, intelligent, buttoned up man who believes in the law regardless of who breaks it. He is making a difference.

How in the world did Bono make it on that list?

He pops up every now and then.  I think he's filling the void left by Princess Dianna.

For Man of the Year:
Dick Cheney
Karl Rove
Mike Brown
the Pope

But I agree and it'll probably be Storm of the Year: Hurricane Katrina or just Mother Nature in general.
