Obama received 27 votes in the Democratic primary, then only won 8 votes in the general election. What caused him to lose all of those votes?

By the way, the 27 votes he received in the primary was also more than the 18 votes John Kerry received in the 2004 presidential election, so it's unlikely that a group of people moved away. Did King County Republicans interfere in the Democratic primary because they thought he'd be an easier opponent than Hillary Clinton?

Maybe one of the 300 residents can explain what happened there.

Remember that there are many voters in the Deep South and in Appalachia who are officially registered to the Democratic party, but generally vote for Republican candidates for most federal offices. These people don't like how the Democrats have become liberal on most social issues.

That doesn't explain why these 21 people voted for Obama in the primary but not in the general.

You would think Dixiecrats would have supported Hillary in the primary.

Probably strategic Republican voters who, as previous poster has pointed out, remain registered with the Democratic Party but vote straight Republican. They probably thought that the black Kenyan Muslim socialist communist anti-Christ would be less electable than a white woman against John McCain, so they voted for Obama. Kinda similar tactics like those employed by Claire McCaskill when she trolled the Republican primary in 2012 to get Todd Akin nominated.

Texas doesn't have party registration. It's open primary.

You could be on to something, as there was a primary for the Senate race on the same day as the Obama/Clinton race. I still find that unlikely because the 21 votes Obama got were still more than Bush and Gore's vote totals. Put simply, they would have been self-identified Republicans by then.

Also, Kerry got exactly 18 votes in the 2004 Democrat primaries and exactly 18 votes in the general election. That's strange too, but the drop in votes Obama received are more interesting because Kerry didn't start fading until the RNC convention.
