Long time editor of the Linden Alabama Democrat-Reporter, Goodloe Sutton,  rolled this editorial out late last week:



Lots of interesting historical theories here (though sadly, no Lincoln-Pol Pot comparisons).  Eventually, the big city folk got wind of the editorial and they asked Goodloe for a little clarification

On their face, his comments are indefensible.  If it turns out that this is somehow due to dementia, perhaps a more charitable reassessment of Mr. Sutton would be in order.  The guy was a real muckraker at one time, and while we don't need the KKK Apologia, we do need more honest muckrakers of all kinds.  It will be sad if this is how it ends for him. 

He should resign as Editor, however.  He's not doing his family's reputation any good, and his comments are of the sort that can inspire the real KKK into some harmful action if taken seriously.

He very well may have been a corruption fighting muckraker oh, but one who harbored deeply racist sentiments which are maybe, possibly, exacerbated, but more likely simply Unleashed now that these probably senile. I just don't see Alzheimer's / dementia as creating racism in someone's mind, rather than simply unleashing the floodgates of inhibition.

He may very well have been like one of those new deal alabaman politicians who may have been quite liberal / Progressive on economic issues, but remained hardcore virulent racist on all issues having to do with segregation.

It's one thing to hear such ranting from a coot in an old age home who also thinks his wife who died 20 years earlier is coming to lunch, versus somebody who's still the editor of a newspaper, no matter how small.
