https://www.reuters.com/article/us-venezuela-politics-general/venezuelan-general-recognizes-opposition-leader-guaido-as-president-twitter-video-idUSKCN1PR0E1

General Francisco Yañez of the Venezuelan Air Force - Director of Strategic Planning of the Military High Command of Aviation - is the first high ranking military officer to reject Maduro and recognize Juan Guaidó as President per a video released today. Among other things, General Yañez claimed Maduro has two planes ready for escaping and that 90% of the Armed Forces were against him (last claim is excessively dubious), and asserted that he would only follow Guaidó's orders as his commander-in-chief.

The Venezuelan Government has predictably branded Yañez a traitor and emphasized that by virtue of his current office he does not command troops (although he does have critical planning responsibilities within the Air Force). It remains unclear whether Yañez is still in Venezuela or may have been forced to flee into Colombia, and the opposition is leading another series of mass protests today.

Senator Rubio, in the meantime, claims there's at least some seven high ranking offers wanting to do the same:

One of the more capable ones in Latin America, at least on paper.  I can't speak to how good their training and maintenance are.

It's major fault as an air force is that they've devoted their resources badly, emphasizing prestigious multi-role fighters such as the F-16 and Su-30 rather than the ground attack/COIN/transport roles that would make sense. Assuming that they got in an air war with another Latin American country and the US stayed out, Brazil and Chile are the only ones that on paper could reasonably expect to contest the Venezuelan Air Force.  But if it did get to a shooting war, the US would get involved and one carrier is more than a match for any of the Latin American air forces.

Venezuela’s parties need to talk this out to avert a Syria 2011 scenario. War isn’t worth it in this case if we can handle this in a truly democratic fashion. It will be on the Opposition if they don’t use their strength in a smart way, instead of using brute force to be the only ones in power in Venezuela.

I hope he’s seized control of a couple fleets or the secret support of other generals currently serving as commanding officers first.
