By attempting to cover their asses from prematurely calling Florida for Gore, some media outlets did inadvertently become at least somewhat pro-Bush.

You mean prematurely calling Florida for Bush.

I'm pretty sure many outlets called it for Gore first and then changed it to Bush.

Oh yes.  They prematurely called it for both Gore and Bush.
