2000 - Gore scrapes in

2004 - Nader runs as an Independent, causing an electoral college deadlock with the GOP-controlled Congress choosing Giuliani in the contingent election.

Of course, it still wasn't enough to get Al Gore re-elected, but what are you gonna do?

Just a nice little experiment with electoral college chaos. Nader runs as an independent as an alternative to Rudy and Gore and spoils the 2004 election, throwing it into the House for the first time in 180 years. Gore wins the popular vote narrowly. They'll be calls for electoral reform.

Inspired by the life expectancy county map that's been circulating on Twitter, here's a close electoral map based on life expectancy by state (using 2020 data).

The Wallace campaign is far more successful, as shown by a narrow victory in Maryland. A handful of Democratic electors in the northeast conspire to back Nixon to avoid a hung college which could benefit the segregationists. The conspiracy succeeds and Nixon is elected President, though I admit I don't know the electoral college laws as they were back then.

This is based on applying the former CSA's result for the 1968 election to the entire country.

I used https://tonymoo2228.github.io/StatesFun/ to "unpack" California and New York, to give Biden the most number of states I could while sorting Trump states by margin. Large populations and their cities are teleported across space to their new states. Screenshot of new state layout. Wyoming no longer exists.

Incumbent president Hillary Clinton is defeated as Americans chafe under what they see as overly restrictive quarantine measures.
