2020: The Suburban Shock

370-168

The 2020 election came around and the Democrats and Biden felt very good about winning the presidency. However, Something very unexpected happens. Trump wins a landslide but interestingly enough, not bu doing better in the rurals. (Trump does better in rural areas but only by a point or two) Instead. Trump was able to reverse the suburban Democratic trend back to Republicans thanks to a generally perceived solid coronavirus response and appealing more to their issues. Many suburban/urban counties that went to Bush in 2004 but never looked back since were returned to the Republicans.

Including but not limited to:

Hillsborough, FL
Hamilton, OH
Centre, PA
Dauphin, PA
Larimer, CO
Arapahoe, CO
Jefferson, CO
Washoe, NV
Radford City, VA

Trump also did 3 points better in urban areas.

Trump upset bigtime in NJ and ME-01 thanks to doing way better in the non-rural areas.

I know I'm going to get called an insane crazy madman lunatic for this but this was just something I came up with if Trump were to shockingly, really outperform expectations in the suburbs. Wishful thinking, I know.

If Willkie and McNary had actually been elected in 1940 and lived to the same dates as they actually did, there would have been an acting president in October 1944, weeks before the election (Willkie died in October, McNary already in February). Whoever Willkie's Secretary of State was would have taken over as acting president. Speaker and senate president pro tem were removed from presidential succession after the Presidential Succession Act of 1886 (these were inserted back after the 1947 version of the said act). This may have turned the election into a mess since ballots were most likely print in most states. Furthermore, World War II was in a very critical phase.

It's actually crazy that just four and a half years after the 1940 presidential election, only one person from the major party tickets was still alive (Henry Wallace; since FDR, Willkie and McNary were all dead by mid 1945).

This assumes he lives a bit longer due to better lifestyle and medical care as prez. But I agree, if elected in 1940, he probably would have died before the 1944 election. Just wanted to do the map anyway.

1976 presidential election

Ronald Reagan takes the nomination from Gerald Ford. Democrats end up with their own brokered convention. In an unprecedented move, party leaders offer their nomination to incumbent Republican Vice President Nelson Rockefeller with the only precondition to switch parties. (side note: This was actually discussed by Hubert Humphrey and others if there is an open convention in 1976, whether Nelson Rockefeller could become their compromise nominee).

✓ Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller (D-NY)/Governor Reubin Askew (D-FL): 287 EV. (50.66%)
Former Governor Ronald Reagan (R-CA)/Senator Richard Schweiker (R-PA): 251 EV. (47.84%)

2012 Presidential election

Sen. Collin Peterson (D-MN)/Gov. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) 279 EVs; 49.53%
Pres. John McCain (R-AZ)/VP Joe Lieberman (R-CT) 259 EVs; 49.51% PV

2016 Presidential election

Pres. Collin Peterson (D-MN)/VP Dan Lipinski (D-IL) 324 EVs; 52.5%
Fmr. Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA)/Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) 214 EVs; 46.3% PV

2020 Presidential election

VP Dan Lipinski (D-IL)/Gov. John Bel Edwards (D-LA) 271 EVs; 50.2%
Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD)/Sen. Brian Sandoval (R-NV) 267 EVs; 49.1% PV

This is extremely implausible. Peterson, Lipinski, and Bel Edwards will not make it in any Democratic Pres Primary.
